The Ashburton Meeting Nominations are due to-day for the Ashburton Racing Club’s meeting to be held at Riccarton. Dictate The Chief Ruler gelding Dictate is to be treated to a well-earned spell. Lord Nuffield Lord Nuffield strode home an easy winner in the Doncaster Handicap at Timaru, and had no difficulty in racing past the speedy Density. Foxlove Foxlove was unlucky in the Timaru Cup, but he had every chance on the second day and was beaten on his merits at the weights. Hard Going The hard going at Timaru jarred some of the horses racing on the first day of the meeting and for that reason some dropped out of engagements on the second day. For Riccarton Mr J. Richardson is sending up the Pink Coat—Repudiation two-year-old to join Aranui at Riccarton. Dracula With Jewish Lad out of the road Dracula had matters all his own way in the Tekapo Hurdles and gave an improved display of hurdling. Density There is no doubt that Density has a good turn of speed and might stay a lot better if not sent out to win all the way. Top Row Top Row shapes as if he has had enough racing for the present, as he does not shape with the same dash as earlier in the season. Flagman Flagman, who won each day at Timaru, is a half-brother to Slayer, He was got by Lord Warden from Battleflag by Martian—Lady Kmloch by Menschikoff— Lady Melton by Bill o Portland. Milford Milford continues to give trouble at the barrier, and so doubly handicaps himself. He has been nominated to race over hurdles, and a course of hurdling might improve his manners at'the barrier. Sir Hugh Sir Hugh, who won on each day at Timaru. was got by Philamor from Mistress Quickly, by Solfermo—Dame Straitlace, by Kilbroney—Discipline, by Treadmill—Madowla, by Trenton. Prior to winning last week Sir Hugh had not raced since January. 1938 Heiress The 1934 bay mare Heiress, by Posteritv from Episode, was purchased for the Kia Ora Stud at 350gns. at the Sydney sales. She is a_ sister to Entail, and was sold as a yearling at Trentham to Mr E. J. Watt for 475gns. A New Stud Mr K. Austin, who will shortly take possession of his new stud farm in North Canterbury, intends to secure an attractive stallion for next season. Included in the mares to be taken to the stud are those at present at Elderslie owned by Dr Nigel Smith and Messrs Samson. Hay and Higgins One Race In meeting Nighlcalm in the Doncaster Handican on the' same terms as when they dead-heated in the Flying Handicap Petersham appeared to hold a good chance of success. Neither Nightcalm nor Petersham ran up to the form of the first day. and apparently one race took the steel out of them. On the Market Rabble won both his races by slaying on at the end of a mile and a-quarler. and the resolute manner of his finishing suggests that lie could cover more ground. Rabble was under offer at 750gns after the meeting, ana as a very likely slayer would not bo dear at the figure. New Zealand New Zealand has left its mark on this year’s racing in Sydney and Melbourne (says “Pilot”). It has done so before, bu{ rarely to the same extent all round. Dominion representatives have included the best three-year-old of the autumn (Defaulter), two-year-old (High Caste), and Melbourne Cup (Catalogue) Metropolitan (Royal Chief) and Warwick Farm Autumn Cup (Malagigi) winners. Admitting onlv good horses are. as a rule sent over it has been demonstrated that those from New Zealand can still more than hold their own against most of our best. It has been fortunate for Australia that Ajax has stood in the way in weight-for-age races Malagigi One of the most interesting lots offered at the bloodstock sale in Sydney on April 17 was the New Zea-land-bred gelding Malagigi. whose form this autumn has boon excellent. First bid for him was 500 guineas,

and. with offers of 100 guineas, he quickly reached 1400 guineas. Bidding then ceased, and, though endeavours were made to persuade the Randwick trainer J. T. Jamieson, who made the final offer, to increase his bid to 1500 guineas, it was unavailing, and Malagigi passed through the ring unsold. Malagigi’s movements are uncertain. It is not likely that he will go to Brisbane for the Queensland Turf Club’s meeting, but a visit may be made later to the Doomben meeting. Asia The Limond filly Asia made a onehorse race of the Autumn Stakes, as she had the finish to herself and is improving with experience. Jewel of Asia, the dam of Asia, also produced Sir John and Coronation. She was got by Grovenor (sire of Roscnor) from Ayesha 11, by Ayrshire. Attractive Programme There is no doubt that a two-day programme at Timaru makes a far more widespread appeal to owners than the single-day programme. Several horses were raced at last week's meeting which in all probability would have been absent from a one-dav fixture. Last week’s meeting was an enjoyable gathering, and the financial returns to the club would have been much better but for several large dividends assisting to tie up the money in circulation. The club was also unlucky in the fact that the hard going kept a few horses off the scene. TROTTING NOTES By Sentinel FIXTURES May 6.—Oamaru T.C May 9. Marlborough T.C. May 11 13.—Forbury Park T.C. Smith has recovered from the effects of his fall at Addington, but will not resume a seat in the sulky for the present. Nelson Eddy In some quarters Nelson Eddy is regarded as the best three-year-old m New Zealand. He is on a 3mm 28scc mark. Siege Gun The Maxegin gelding Siege Gun paid over a score and a-half when he won the Gladstone Trot. His dam. Darkstream, was got by Coldstream Bells from Eunice, by Belle Vue—Elsie W., by Young Irvington. Van Derby According to reports. Van Derby has settled sown, now works quietly on the track and without any evidence of being fractiously inclined. The real test will, however, come when he appears in public. Ochiltree Ochiltree, the sister to Wrackler, won at Timaru in 3min 20 3-ssec and finished third on the second day m 2min 43 3-ssec. but without much chance of overhauling Dusky. Sound in the run home. Dusky Sound The Happy Voyage gelding Dusky Sound won going away at the finish of the Otipua Trot. He won in 2mm 43 4-ssec without being fully extended in the run home. Leading Winners Indianapolis lias won £10,157 in stakes and trophies to date, but he appears to have little chance of bettering the stake winning records of Great Bingen and Logan Chief, winners of £14,000 and £12.000 respectively. Forbury Park Handicaps In the published list of handicaps for the Domain Handicap at the Forbury Park meeting the name of Shandon Chimes appeared twice. The correct mark of that pacer is scratch,, while Sinbad, on 24 yards, should be included. Indianapolis The Addington trainer J. Fraser, jun., gave a flat denial last week to the report that Indianapolis was to be retired to the stud. “ Indianapolis will race again all right You can give a flat denial to those reports about his retirement to the stud.” remarked Fraser to a Christchurch writer. Strong Team J. Fraser, jun., who recently set up as a public trainer at Addington has a big team of horses in work. These include Van Derby. Indianapolis. Grand Mogul Bittersweet, De Soto, Horsepower, Te Kahu, Harold Guy, Norman Fox, Queen Wrack (a half-sister to De Soto), and a four-year-old gelding by Wrack from Regina de Oro (the dam of Native Chief). An Inquiry An inquiry was held into the cause of the mishap in the Gladstone Trot at Timaru. It was found that Mackscot fell through trying to jump the crossing leading across the track to the inside tracks. It was decided that in future cut grass should be spread on the crossing. RICCARTON YEARLINGS A GOOD DRAFT (Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Apl. 29. Several Riccarton trainers have yearlings in their stables, and from present indications there will be some good candidates on the local tracks before long, in preparation for next year’s two-year-old races. G. Ridgway, who looked after the team of F. A. Roberts until he returned from Sydney with Defaulter, has a couple of likely colts under his care. Mr H. D. Greenwood’s one by Beau Pere from Amante, by Chief Ruler, is a big fellow that may be good, though he may need time before he is seen at his best. Another in the same stable, owned by Mr W, Hosking, of Auckland, is by Foxlight from Magnitude, by Lackham from a mare of the Watersprite line. J. C. Tomkinson has broken in two colts of exceptional promise. One of them bred and owned by Mr W. A. White, is by Beau Pere from Helen Hunt, by Hunting Song from Helen Rufus, This is the family from which Mr G. F. Moore has had many good horses. The other youngster in Tomkinson’s stable will be raced by the trainer, in partnership with Mr R. E. Adair, who bred the colt. He is by Myosotis from Bourse, by Limond from Commerce, a branch of the Nautilus family that gained fame at Stonyhurst. T. H. Gillett has a filly, owned by Mr E. Hay. She is by Iliad from Princess Doreen, a Chief Ruler marc from the Desert Gold family. The filly is a likely sort, resembling her dam. a good race marc. In the team which H. R. Davies has in work there are four yearlings The Bulandshar—Monetto filly, purchased bv Mr R. L. McCormack at the Trentham sales for 350gns, is a regular attendant at the tracks, where she has made manv friends. The other three, all by Myosotis. are being prepared to carry (lie colours of their breeder, Mr G. Murray Aynsley. They are a colt from Muff (dam of Rebellion) filly from Reproachful (dam of Chide), and colt from Orris, by Paladin from Orange Blossom (clam of Silver Ring). F. D. Jones, whose two-year-olds this season numbered four, has only one youngster in his care for next season This is the colt by Hunting Song from Kinetic, a Penury mare, dam of Adalene a smart performer a few vears ago. W. Cameron has made a start on the colt by Inflation from Kippit Lee. by Arausio from Snowshoc, by Kilbroney from Snowstell. This is the family that produced Arctic King. There will be some more yearlings in local stables later on. but those noted here, added to half a dozen under the care of H. and A. Cutis, should include some good performers for next season.

OTAGO HUNT MEET AT EAST TAIERI The weekly met of the Otago Hunt was held on Saturday at East Taien over the properties of Messrs J. Tregilgus, J. Hardie, and J. Dunery. The weather conditions were ideal, and the rain that had fallen on Friday was just sufficient to make good going. Followers met at the Mosgiel Railway Station at 3 p.m., and shortly afterwards the throw-off took place in Mr Tregilgus’s property. The first part of the course had been altered from previous hunts, and several excellent jumps had been erected parallel to the station. Except for the face horses —which had been kept to the rear—the majority of the field was well bunched, and the spectators on the rise at the Main South road watched an excellent hunt. Horses that jumped particularly well included Robert B. (Mr J. E, Brunton), Donegal (Mr W. Muirhead), Royal Glen (Mr L, Bowker. Dunback), Marquis (Mr James Richards). Mystery (Miss N. Kerr), Lady Lu (Miss D. Medley), Johnnie Walker (Mr B. Hastie), and Pallaforn. (Mr S. McKay). Before leaving, the master (Mr J. E. Brunton) took the opportunity of thanking the property owners, and especially Mr Dunery’s family for assisting with afternoon tea. Among those present were the following:—The master (Mr J. E. Brunton) on Robert 8., the deputy master (Mr W. Muirhead) on Donegal, the huntsman (Mr R. Harvey) on Blackthorne, the whip (Mr T. Dillon) on Samson, the honorary whip (Mr S. Robb) on Star, Mrs T. Anderson on Glendhu, D. Hastie on Dandy. ADDINGTON NOTES A STRONG TEAM (Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Apl. 29. J. Fraser has probably the biggest team under his care at Addington. It includes many high-class horses which should be much in the limelight, especially next season. The pacer Van Derby has a brilliant future if he can be induced to race as smoothly as he paces in his private trials. > Grand Mogul appears to have got rid of an affliction that prevented him from reproducing his best for some time, and it is only a question of his returning to form to win more than one big event next summer. Prior to the three accidents which put him out of court he had shown that he was one of the best horses in the Dominion. Indianapolis is doing light exercise, but Horse Power is being kept in work in anticipation of further victories in the near future. He looks very well after his hard racing at Easter, and is a tough customer off his present mark. De Soto is a recent addition to the stable. At present he is sound, and if Fraser can keep him so he will have a strong representative for big events later on, but De Soto has broken down so often that it is rather much to be expected that he will keep sound long enough ■ to give him a thorough preparation. Other horses in the stable are i orman Fox,. Harold Guy, Bittersweet, and a half-sister to De Soto. Indianapolis will race at Addington in August. His owner, Mr G. J. Barton. has no intention of retiring the ex-champion to the stud, and is confident (hat the triple Now Zealand Trotting C :p winner will return to form. Judged on appearance, Indianapolis is as healthy as ever, but his performances during the past two years have not been up to his best standard. A rest is said to have made a marked improvement in him, and the hoof that has often interfered with his preparations is normal again. The Addington trainer E. N. Kennedy has gone to Auckland with Shrewdie, Three Bells, and Amywin. It is his intention to settle at Epsom for a short time, and if he is reasonably successful he may make his headquarters there next season. He started off well bv winning a race to-day with Three Bells. W, *J, Allan, owner of the doublegaited performer, Gentleman Joe. has rented the stables recently vacated by Mr G J. Barton. Allan has had a very successful innings with Gentlemen Joe. the gelding having won six races. Gentleman Joe appears to have nearly reached his best at the trotting gait, but he has a big future as a pacer, for he has a lot of speed and is a genuine stayer.

TROTTING AT PERTH NEW ZEALAND SUCCESSES ROLLO AND VESUVIUS SCORE New Zealand-bred pacers played a prominent part in the West Australian Trotting Club’s Easter carnival. Kay Francis won the Kunanoppin Handicap in 3min 20sec, and Wrecker, from 96yds, won the Holiday Handicap, running the mile and three-quarters in 3min 53isec —a 2min ISJsec mile rate. The Easter Trottine Cup, of £1750. was run in six divisions. The fifth division saw a battle royal between Hollo and Cloudy Range, both off 103yds, the former scoring by half a yard in 3min Sl^sec —a 2min 12Jsec rate. The next heat fell to Vesuvius, also on 108yds, whose time, 3min 543 sec, was a 2min 14Jsec rate. In the final the New Zealand horses found the handicap too great, the winner, Spot Dance. 48yds, going 3min 54isec. Ruby’s Last, 24yds, was second, and Logan Design, 12yds, third. The Moora Handicap was won by the West Australian-bred mare Ancient Mary, by Antique—Pindot, who returned a win dividend of over two centuries. RACING IN ENGLAND ONE THOUSAND GUINEAS LONDON, Apl, 28.
