CIVIL AVIATION
POSITION IN AUSTRALIA BOARD TO BE ABOLISHED SYDNEY. Jan. 10. (Received Jan. 10, at 11.15 p.m.) Mr H. V. Thorby, Minister of Civil Aviation, accompanied by his wife and daughter, left by flying boat to-day for Singapore. Before leaving he made the surprise announcement that the Civil Aviation Board, which was severely criticised at the conclusion of the recent Kyeema inquiry, was to be replaced by a Director-general of Civil Aviation, who will act in collaboration with senior technical officers.
Mr Thorby added that Mr M. W. Mehaffey, the present Directorgeneral of Public Works, would act temporarily in that capacity pending a permanent appointment by the Federal Cabinet next month. Mr Mehaffey, who is a New Zealander, was a lecturer in engineering at a New Zealand university college In 1909 and 1910.
Mr Mehaffey, who was born In Invercargill, was lecturer in engineering at Canterbury College in 1909 and 1910, and assistant gineer for the Auckland Harbour Board in 1912, in which year he went to Queensland.
