MILTON Sale of Property An important sale of properly situated at Lovell’s Flat, about eight miles south of Milton, was effected last month through the agency of Messrs Donald Reid and Co., Ltd. -The Oarvan Estate, owned by Mr Peter Boyd, was sold to Mr H. G. Robinson, Moneymore, and the new owner enters into possession at the end of the present month. The property which comprises 13ty) acres of freehold, has been m the possession of the Boyd family since the early days. It is the intention of Mr Boyd 19 devote his time to his sheep run at Hindon. # Salvation Army transfers

The annual transfers of the officers of the Salvation Army take place this month, and the two stationed at Milton have received their marching orders." Captain Cunningham, who came to Milton about four months ago from Masterton, has not been in the best of health lately, and will go on sick leave for a few weeks before takins up her new appointment. Lieutenant Clifford has received notice of her transfer to Oxford. Welcome Home Mr and Mrs C. Townley, who were recently married and have taken up their residence at Milton, were tendered a welcome home at their residence on Saturday evening by a large circle of friends from Milton and Kaitangata. The time was pleasantly spent in games and competitions, etc., and best wishes were extended for their future happiness and success in business locally. Obituary The death at Hawera last Wednesday of Mr Alexander Carnie removes another former well-known resident of Table Hill and Milton. Born in Scotland, the deceased, who had reached the age of 85 years, came to New Zealand as a young man. A practical farmer, he held the position of manager of various large farms in the Central Otago and southern districts before he purchased a property at Table Hill. After several years there, he retired from active labours, owing to failing health, and he then removed to Milton. He married Miss Helen Black, and he is survived by his widow and a family of two sons and four daughters. About seven years ago Mr and Mrs Carnie shifted to Hawera. EASTERN SOUTHLAND Cricket The Eastern Southland Senior and Junior Grade competition cricket matches were to have been resumed on. Saturday, but no games were played. Due to seasonal farm operations. the country clubs. Pukerau, Waikoikoi, and Heriot-Edievale, were unable to raise teams, while the Wyndham fixtures wore postponed on account of a district bereavement. It has not vet been decided whether Saturday’s games will be played next Saturday. Court Returns The returns for the Gore Magistrate’s Court for the quarter ended December 31 reveal that eight sittings of the court were held, and that 83 criminal cases were heard, including nine charges against females and fqur against children. For the same period in 1937, 37 criminal cases were heard, all being against males, while nine boys were dealt witl? in the Children’s Court. Fines during the quarter totalled £76 4s 6d. and costs amounted to £37 6s. There were five sittings of the civil court, for which 200 summonses were issued. For the last quarter of 1937, 172 summonses were issued The amount claimed was £1687. com-, pared with £2015 9s lOd in 1937. and the amount recovered was £1047 4s 7d, as against £995 15s 7d for the final quarter of 1937.
