CLYDE Cricket The second round of cricket fixtures commenced on Saturday, Clyde and Cromwell meeting at Clyde. Clyde had first strike, knocking up 58, of which total O’Reilly (24) and Parris (18) were the only batsmen to withstand the bowling of Benson (two for five), Mclnnes (four for 11), McCulloch (three for 11), and Rankin (one for 24). Cromwell, however, made only 41 runs, Rankin with nine being top scorer and byes accounting for eight. Groves (four for six) and Parris (five for 25) were the two best bowlers for Clyde The Weather Although not yet settled down, the weather nas improved. Rain threatened, on Saturday afternoon, but passed over, Sunday being fine and warm Road Traffic Numbers of holiday makers still continue to pass through Clyde, some returning and., others starting out. Accidents have been very few for the large amount of traffic that has been on the road in this area. _ Tar-sealing is now being carried on between Clyde and Alexandra, and as there is plenty of room at the side the work can be done without interrupting traffic. Fruit Industry Larger consignments of fruit, peaches and apricots in particular, are leaving daily for destinations as far away as Auckland. The regular summer night train commenced running on Sunday.

WANAKA The Weather Except for two rather boisterous days of north-west winds. Wanaka has enjoyed perfect summer weather for the last fortnight, allowing farmers to proceed with shearing, harvesting and haymaking. Swimming in the lake has been enjoyed by visitors and residents. Night temperatures have been mild.

Bowling The first match of the holidays, between rinks drawn from the visitors and the Wanaka Bowling Club, was played on Boxing Day. A rink of ladies from the Alexandra Bowling Club visited Wanaka on Saturday to play a rink representing the Wanaka Club for the Wilson-Hull Cup. Wanaka was again successful, retaining the cup. The scores were as follows (Alexandra names first):— Mesdames Hannay, Hull, Gault. Hewitt 14, Mesdames Studholme, Anderson, Ballantyne, McKegg 18. An interesting challenge match was played last week between teams drawn from Otago and Southland. Mr Bartholomew was skip of the Otago players, who proved too good for the opposition, running out winners 25—17. Lawn Tennis A Yankee Mixed Doubles Tourney arranged by Miss Scaife and Dr John Fulton was held on the Wanaka courts on Saturday. There was a large number of entries, and once again the excellent handicapping by Dr Fulton resulted in many closely contested games. The final between Mr and Mrs Saunders, of Auckland (owe 4) and Mr and Miss Tait, of Timaru (plus 4) proved a most exciting match played in a very sporting spirit, and was won by Mr and Mrs Saunders after a great tussle, 26—24. Mr 'Satterthwaite, of Timaru, in a brief speech, thanked those responsible fo* - the arrangement of the tournament, and complimented Wanaka on its well-supported tennis club. Cricket The annual cricket match between visitors and the Wanaka Club was played last week. The result was a win for the visitors by 151 to 91. A feature of the game was the top score made by Mr W. Brinsley, sen., who was, incidentally, the oldest player in the team. Personal Mr Cecil Drury and Mr G. Nicoll, of Ashburton, have returned home. Dr and Mrs Russell King are camping at Glendhu. . . , „ Mr and Mrs G. R. Ritchie, of Dunedin, were the guests of Miss Mill last week. , . Visitors from Dunedin who were at Lake Hawea last week were Dr and Mrs Batchelor and Mr L. Batchelor, Mr and Mrs Birch and Miss M. Birch. Wing-commander the Hon. R. A. Cochrane and Mrs Cochrane were visitors to Wanaka during the week. Mr and Mrs J. Laidlaw left for Dunedin yesterday. Mr and Mrs Edgar Hazlett and Mr and Mrs Douglas Ramsay, ot Dunedih, are enjoying a brief stay in Wanaka. Dr John Fulton is the guest of Mr and Mrs W. Scaife, Glendhu. Mr and Mrs S. Downey and Mr and Mrs Williams, who spent a holiday at Wanaka, have returned to Dunedin. Mrs Robert Fulton returned to Dunedin during the week-end. Mrs Leslie Wilson was a visitor to Wanaka last week, and returned to Dunedin with Mr Erlton Wilson on Wednesday. Mr and Mrs L. Scaife, who have been camping at Glendhu have returned to Timaru. Mr Ongley, who has been the guest of Mr and Mrs G. Morris, has returned to Taihape.

Valedictory A farewell social and dance was given on Friday night in honour of Mr and Mrs J. M. Mackay, jun., who are leaving the district. Mr Mackay has been in business in Wanaka for a number of years, and has taken a keen interest in all progressive activities in the Upper Clutha. Mr W. Studholme made a presentation to Mr and Mrs Mackay on behalf of the residents of the district. .Mr W. Manson spoke on behalf of the Progress League, of which Mr Mackay was secretary for some years. Mr F. Collings spoke on behalf of the Cricket Club, Mr Mackay being the president. A successful dance followed. LAWRENCE Personal Mr and Mrs W. B. Simpson, of Blue Spur, have returned from a holiday at Balfour. Mrs M. A. Smythe is spending a holiday in Auckland. Mr and Mrs C. Beatson, of Dunedin, are the guests of Mrs J. Muir, of Wetherstones. Miss Betty Pitt, of Wanganui, is at present in Lawrence. Mr and Mrs A. Weatherall have returned home after a visit to Dunedin. Mr P. C. Browne, of Christchurch, is visiting Lawrence. Mr and Mrs W. Christie spent the Christmas and New Year holidays in Dunedin. Mr E. M. Stevens is at present on' his annual leave. Mr A. Marslin, of Balclutha, is spending a holiday in Lawrence. Mr and Mrs E. J. Phelan have returned from a holiday at Nightcaps. Mr D. A. Fletcher, of Dunedin, was in Lawrence for the holidays. Mrs J. McKinlay has returned after spending a few days at Manukau Creek. Mr B. OMAKAU Cricket After a lapse of four weeks, matches in the cricket competition were resumed on Saturday. Omakau met Excelsior B at Alexandra, Excelsior winning by 197 runs to 101. Batting first, Excelsior scored quickly. Mount (54, retired). Pierce (29), and Stuart (28) being the principal scorers. For Omakau, Pont (three for 10), White (two for 26), and Anicich (two for 44) were the best bowlers. Omakau’s innings closed for 101. O’Connor (16) being top scorer. Bowling for Excelsior. Mount took four for 25 and Stuart two for seven. Personal Mrs J. Faulks, of Pembroke, is the guest of Mrs J. Mackay, Ophir. Several motor accidents of a minor nature were reported in the district during the holiday season, none of them having any serious results. A sedan car was overturned near Lauder on Wednesday, the sole occupant being uninjured. While assisting to right the vehicle, Mr A. King, of the Central Garage, received a painful blow on the nose from the handle of the winch. A four-seater sedan car returning from Pembroke on Saturday morning left the road near Tiger Hill and overturned. Beyond a shaking and bruises, none of the four occupants was hurt, but the car was considerably damaged. This is the third accident of this nature at this spot within recent months.

Obituary Mr Frederick William Brady, whose death occurred at Dunedin on Thursday, was well known in the district, in which he had resided for many years. Mr Brady lived at Chatto Creek, and for a number of years conducted a boot repairing business at Omakau. He was keenly interested in sport, and was connected with Rugby football in Dunedin in his younger days. He took part in the formation of the original Omakau Cricket Club, for which he acted as official scorer, and the members of the present club wore black rosettes in their match at Alexandra on Saturday as a mark of respect. The funeral, which took place at Omakau on Saturday, was largely attended, the service at the graveside being conducted by the Rev. H. West, of Alexandra. Mr Brady is survived by his widow and a grown-up family. The Weather

Night Train It is understood that an endeavour is being made by local business men to have a mail despatched from Opiakau by the night fruit train which commenced running on Sunday. CROMWELL The Weather The weather, which up to the start of the holiday season, has been most unseasonable, underwent a change for the better last week. During the past few days ideal summer weather has been experienced, the temperature on seyeral occasions reaching a high level. - Cricket In the association cricket fixtures on Saturday, Cromwell A met Excelsior A at Cromwell, and the home team was defeated by 47 runs to 115. For Excelsior A, Gourley (63) and Thomson (30) were the principal scorers. For Cromwell A, Lynn (39), Johnston (37), and Pauli (19) were chief scorers. Cromwell B met Clyde at Clyde, and in a low-scoring match the home team won by 58 rims to 41. Holiday Period Theref has been a large influx of holiday-makers to the town during the festive season, and hotels and boarding houses have had their accommodation taxed to the utmost. There has also been a large number of campers. With the more settled weather conditions of last week, a large number of holiday-makers is still on the move, and there has also been a large volume of traffic through the town. Stone Fruit Crop The more favourable weather conditions experienced lately have had a beneficial effect on orchards, and stone, fruit is ripening more freely. A considerable quantity was forwarded from the local railway station last week, a leading grower despatching some five tons. Grass Fire The present season has been singularly free from grass fires, which are usually prevalent in the neighbourhood at this time of the year. On Thursday, however, the first of these occurred when there was an outbreak in a vacant section in Horace street. The brigade was promptly on the scene, and had the fire under control before any damage occurred. Angling Conditions for anglers have improved somewhat, and, although bags have not been as good as former years, some fair catches have been made on the Clutha River
