(Received Dec. 26, at 6.30 p.m.) The rebels occupied Mayali and Sarroca. They profess surprise was responsible for the ease of the first day's advance against 200,000 Loyalists in the Segre, Noguera, and Pallaresa sectors. General Franco is optimistic. The death has occurred of the rebel Minister of Public Order, Feneral Martinez Anido, from influenza. ENGLISH WOMAN SHOT CONSULAR BAG INCIDENT LONDON, Dec. 25. (Received Dec. 26, at 6.30 p.m.. The News Chronicle's Btendaye correspondent reports that'the English wife of the ex-film magnate, Senor Carreras, was shot on December 20 with a Spanish woman, it is alleged for complicity in the Consular bag incident. The Franco authorities associated the woman with the discovery of a letter rolled up in Mr Goodman's underwear. The British United Press Madrid correspondent says a Loyalist mine blew up trenches manned bfr Moors. Artillery and machine-gun emplacements at the University inflicted many casualties. The city's besieged population is making its Christmas dinner sparingly from horse meat, dried peas, lentils, and beans. Soldiers in the trenches are receiving tobacco and brandy, but Madrid's children are going without presents.. \ REBELS STILL ADVANCING HUNDREDS OF PRISONERS BURGOS, Dec. 24. (Received Dec. 26, at 10 p.m.) The rebels are continuing their offensive over snow-clad heights which rise 5000 feet. It is claimed that they penetrated republican positions 10 miles in certain areas, taking hundreds of prisoners and considerable equipment. Their successes are still mounting. THAW SLOWS DOWN ADVANCE LOYALISTS NOW ATTACKING LONDON, Dec. 24. (Received Dec. 26, at 10 p.m.) The British United Press Barcelona correspondent reports that a thaw slowed the rebel infantry advance and initiative seems to have passed to the loyalists, who are now attacking. The rebels claim art advance of 12$ miles in western Catalonia. Senor Negrin broadcast a statement: "To all Spaniards in republican and nationalist zones, as well as those residing abroad," announcing the suspension of death sentences for high treason, espionage and rebellion. The rebels claim to have brought down 23 loyalist i warplanes in two battles.
