Miss Drennan presided over the December meeting of the Milton Institute, when the motto was "Peace on earth; goodwill toward men," and the roll-call was "A joke." Much amusement was caused by an " "•pron and mad hatter" parade. The hostesses were Mesdames Hay, Porter, and Scott.

The Tomahawk Institute held a social evening and Christmas tree party on Tuesday last, when the concert opened with the singing of Christmas carols by Miss Brunton's choir. The programme was as follows: Piano solo, Miss Hilda Robertson; recitation, Miss Ethne Ings; vocal solo, Miss Mary Donaldson; sketch, Macandrew Bay Institute; cornet solo, Mr Smith; vocal duet, Misses Kathleen Allen and Merle Swanson; pipe selections, Master Stewart; playette. Waitati Institute; character duet, Misses Dulcie Williams and Nola Binnie; piano-accordion solo, Mr Binnie; vocal solo, Miss Ellen Merry; violin solos, Miss V Diet Brunton; "Pop-eye" ballet, Macandrew Bay Institute members. Supper was followed by a dance, the music being supplied by Mrs Dickson, Master Stewart, and Messrs Binnie and Harbrow.

The monthly meeting of the Awa-moko-Georgetbwn Institute was held recently, Mrs D. Kennedy presiding Arrangements were made for the annual picnic to be held at Friendly Bay in January. The roll call was "What I Would like for Christmas." The competition—six pieces of shortbread —was won by Mesdames Smith and Smith, with Mesdames Smart and Ayson third. The junior competition was won by Miss May Ledingham. Two instructive and interesting demonstrations were given—"lcing a Cake," by Mrs Fricker, and "Pin Work," by Miss Paton. The hostesses were Mesdames Gillett and Smith.

An occasional application of furniture polish helps to keep the wooden back of clothesbrush or hairbrush in condition. The brush must be perfectly dry when this treatment is applied.
