NO SMOKING

NOT EVEN FOR WOMEN? (From Our Own Correspondent) LONDON, Nov. 21. Ach zo! But smoking for women in Germanv may soon be verboten! Why? Ask Herr Julius Streicher, the Nuremberg Nazi leader. Smoking destroys a woman's body and soul, he says. And besides, it is a fact that der Fuhrer and II Duce do not smoke, which explains why they can do " big things "! These enlightening facts have been amassed by Herr Streicher and reported by The Times Munich correspondent. "He has discovered in smoking a new evil which, like Judaism, must be banished from the Third Reich if the German race is not to collapse into decadence," the correspondent said. "Addressing 1000 men and women welfare workers at Nuremberg, he condemned all smoking on the ground that it inevitably shortened life and produced ill-health and sterility in women, and likened its effects over a long period to those of strychnine. 'When a woman gives herself up to the enjoyment of smoking,' he said, 'she destroys not only her body, but her souL' THOSE JEWS AGAIN "Herr Streicher rather vaguely linked up the evil of tobacco with the machinations of the Jews and the degeneracy of pre-Hitler Germany. One of his chief arguments against tobacco was that neither Herr Hitler nor Signor Mussolini was a smoker, and 'therefore were able to do big things.' He declared that something would have to be done in the near future with regard to this problem, and that the advertising of cigarettes which might influence the youth of Germany must be stopped. "Herr Streicher pointed out that he did not wish his remarks to lead to ill-judged propaganda by the overzealous. 'Do not misunderstand me,' he said. 'I do not want to see fanatics going about with leaflets saying "the German woman does not smoke," and distributing them on inopportune occasions. I would much rather have a voman who smokes but who moves about gracefully than one who strides about with a manly gait in hob-nailed boots.'"
