THE Otago Daily Times. "Inveniam viam aut faciam” [Established November 15, 1861.] DUNEDIN SATURDAY, DEC 2 1867.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO

The news from Victoria, by the Omeo, is more than ordinarily interesting. The English mail had not arrived, but European intelligence, up to the 15th October, had reached Melbourne, via America It would not be safe to place too much reliance on it, for information from this source is notoriously untrustworthy. But, serious as is its nature, there is this to be said in support of it, that it coincides with what was more or less expected By the latest intelligence previously received, there was no room to doubt that Garibaldi’s movement on Rome was calculated to create important results True, the prompt arrest to which he was subjected, seemed likely to nip the expedition in the bud, and it is quite possible such may yet turn out to be the case But Garibaldi’s was a popular cause, and it seems far from certain that his temporary arrest would check a movement dear to the minds of numberless thousands, and which had its echo within the very walls of the city he was marching to attack. The American news points to Garibaldi’s effort being continued, and to serious complications between France and Italy likely to arise from it. Italy, single-handed, would have no chance against France . but would not Prussia assist her ally of a few months back, and at the same time satisfy the mutual distrust between herself and France, which has for her a long while been steadily increasing ?

Among the passengers by the steamer Otago, on his way to Invercargill, is Mr R. Cleave, who, with a party of ten diggers, left Martin’s Bay not many days before the Geelong arrived there.

He has communicated to us information which must considerably enhance the favorable estimate formed of the locality by the party who visited it in the Geelong. The beaches are auriferous, and in some parts they were found to be payable, for in one spot the party washed up 40oz of gold in two days, with a gin-case, and when they brought in a race, thejr obtained 31bs 3oz for three weeks work. Another party had obtained payable gold to the north of Big Bay, and it is believed they are to return there. It was that party of whom traces were found at the head of Lake M'Kerrow. The severe weather of the season prevented work for more than a very few weeks.

The proprietor of the Menagerie having reduced the charge for admission to one shilling for adults and sixpence for children, affords a cheap opportunity of visiting an exhibition of animals so rarely to be seen in these colonies.

We understand that the Secretary ot the Cricket Club has received a communication from Christchurch, stating that the Canterbury team will arrive here" by the mail steamer, on the 20th January, to play the Inter-Provincial match with Otago. We are also informed that representations have been made from the Dunedin Club that, owing to the excessively wet weather which we have had here and as, for the last three months,, the Otago players have not been able to practise, a suggestion for the postponement of the match for a short time has been made. To this request we do not think the visiting team will agree, as we noticed in the Canterbury “ Press, upwards of three weeks since, that the United Christchurch Clubs had then determined on sending down their representatives on the 20th proximo
