CLUTHA COUNTY

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Clutha County Council was held yesterday, the following being present: Crs T. Maginness (chairman), J. W. Thomson, A. Mclntosh, A. T. Hams J. K. Ross, J. Gumming. W. J. McKenzie, R Brown, J. W. Dunn, and A. V. King Correspondence The board’s representative. No. 17 District Highways Council, advised that the scheme for a deviation on the Balclutha-Kaka Point mam highway at Finegand had been completed but was being held in abeyance until the Railways Department had decided on its policy regarding the proposed railway deviation.—Received. The district officer of the Transport Department wrote stating that the council’s suggestion that the 30 rniles an hour restriction sign be moved to a new location so as to include Rosebank within the restricted area, had been taken up by the commissioner o. transport.—The commissioner of transport (Mr G. L. Laurenson) advised that the matter had been considered, and he suggested that instead of an extension of the restricted area suitable caution notices should be erected, indicating an approach to a residential area.—Received. The board’s representative. Nos. lo and 17 District Highways Council, wrote urging that special attention should be given to the conditioning and maintenance of main highways during the holiday season.—Noted, Mr L. Trounson. Maclennan, applied for permission to erect a hut on skids on the beach end of the Tautuku River road to house a fishing launch.Granted. „ iu Mr W. Latimei, Tuapcka Mouth, applied for permission to occupy v stretch of land on the Clydevale roadside for grazing cows.—Granted. The district engineer of the Public Works Department advised that the council’s proposals for work on Telegraph road had been approved, the cost (£130) to be subsidised at the rate of £2 for £l.—Noted. Hospital Extensions The proposal of the South Otago Hospital Board to raise a loan of £25,000 for extensions and improvements to the Balclutha Hospital was discussed by the council, when the board wrote asking the council if it i had any objections to the raising of the loan.

Cr McKenzie, chairman of the Hospital Board, explained the necessity for the loan, stating that unless more accommodation were provided it would be difficult for the institution to fulfil its obligations. Cr Harris, also a member oJ the board, stated that the chief items of expenditure would be £9OOO for extensions to the nurses’ home, £II,OOO for a new children’s ward and main connecting corridor, and £ISOO for a new store and splints rooms. It was decided to raise no objections to the loan, provided it were a longterm one. Finance The clerk advised- that receipts for the month amounted to £1239 18s Id. and exoenditure to £4107 8s 3d Ranger’s Report The county ranger (Mr W. N. Taylor) reported that he had found 62 head of cattle, one horse and three bulls wandering on roads during the month. The report was approved, Dog Collars The tender of J. E. Watson and Co. was accepted for the supply of 2500 dog collars, the price being £3 5s per 100 Engineer’s Report The engineer (Mt A. C. : McLay) submitted the following monthly report:— MAIN HIGHWAYS Balclutha-Papatowai.—The Roma-hapa-Houipapa portion has been graded once, and Balclutha-Romahapa portion graded twice. During the period approximately '4O cubic yards of maintenance gravel haye been placed on the Gatlins section and further gravelling is in progress on the Richardson. South Molyrteux and Gatlins sections. This highway is in fairlv good order throughout. Papatowai-Waikawa. —The scarifying and reshaping of the first six miles of this highway was in progress during the period, and is now completed. A much improved surface has resulted. This highway is generally in fair order. Balclutha-Kaka Point.—This highway is in good order, having been graded twice during the month, and the work of extending the culvert at Smith’s Corner Port Molyneux is in progress. Waiwera-Clydevaie.—The Waiwera end of this highway has been graded and the highway is in good order throughout. Approximately 30 cubic yards of gravel have been placed on the first mile.

Clinton-Clydevale. Approximately 160 cubic yards of maintenance gravel

have been placed on the Wairuna section of this highway which is in fair order throughout . Waipahi-Pomahaka.—The highway was graded once Iduring the month and given general surfacing attention. It is in good order, i McNab-Rae’s Junction. —This highway has been graded once during the month, and general surfacing and tabling have been carried oul and it is in good order; at present. Waikaka-Kelso.—-This highway has been graded once Romahapa-Port Molyneux - The highway has been igraded once during the month and at present is in good order. < Owaka-Purekireki. —This has been graded twice this month and approximately 190 cubic yards of maintenance gravel have been placed RIDINGS Gatlins. —On the Ratanui-Tanakopa Beach road a further 54 cubic yards of maintenance metal have been placed and 16 cubic yards of metal have been placed on O’Conrieirs road Maclennan. —A further 30 cubic yards of maintenance metal have been placed on Purak-Buiti West road and 16 cubic yards on Puketiro Station road Purakamji Stream road has been scarified, shouldered and reshaped and Walkoata road has been shouldered and graded A portion of the clay formation on the PuketiroTawanui road has been regraded and general grading_ carried out on Puaho and Stuarts Sidjng roads An inspection has been ipade of the section of Harrington’s rodd affected by sawdust Any deviation made would necessarily be of a major nature and over two swampy creeks besides making access to several houses more difficult. It is recommended (that the sawdust be given periodical attention by the surfaceman.

Clinton.—Metalling on Memo Creek road is in progress, and a further 117 cubic yards have been placed this month. On Cl'inton-Wyndham road 38 cubic yards of maintenance metal have been placed and 55 cubic yards on Clinton-Mataura road.

Clydevale.—A length ot clay formation on Deaker’s road has been reformed. Clydevale-Clinton, McFarlane, Clydevale-Rongahere and John n’ Groat’s roads have been graded. General surfacing has been carried out on Wybers’. -King, Clydevale-Ronga-here, Clydevale-Lambourn, and Wharetoa roads, and a number of washouts on these roads have been repaired. Clutha. —Water tables and drams on Hospital road. Toshvale, and various Rosebank streets have been cleared. The parking area at Waiwera Hall has been formed with the grader and a

coat ot gravel has been spread. Repairs have been made to Te Houka road, and 42 cubic yards of maintenance metal and 40 cubic yards of gravel have been placed. Glenkenich. —On McCall’s road 39 cubic yards of maintenance gravel have been placed, and 14 cubic yards on Kelso-Maitland road, and 9 cubic yards on Swamp road. The following roads have been graded during the month:— Kelso-Swamp, Kelso-Maitland, Brock’s, Merino Downs. Merino Downs School, and McKenzie. Shouldering has been carried out on Kelso-Maitland and Merino Downs roads. Pomahaka.—Reformation work on Carruther’s road has been completed. Loose metal on Taumata road has been raked off. General surfacing has been done on Pdpotunoa road, and broom cutting has been done on Pomahaka River road, Richardson.—Anderson’s road and a section of Hillfoot road have been shouldered and reshaped, and a further clay section on Hillfoot road regraded. A new 9in culvert has been placed on Waiwera Township at Anderson’s corner, 35 feet of concrete pipes being used. The pipes for the renewal of the culvert on Allandale road have been carted out. Williamson’s road and a portion of the Kaihiku-Warepa road have been graded, and the formation on River Bank road Finegand has been started.

South Molyneux.—During the month tabling and surfacing has been carried out on Willowmeade, School. Puerua Valley Twine Hill, Centre. Wright’s Track. Jones’s, and Karoro Creek roads. Waipahi—On Mason’s road, 38 chains of reformation work has been done and 13 chains of ditching completed, and this road is now in order for gravelling. On Black’s road, 27 chains of reformation has been completed Culverts have been cleared and gem eral surfacing carried out on Koi Dial, Cemetery Hill, and Glenshee roads. Tabling and surfacing work has been done on Arthurton -Landslip, and Arthurton Top roads. Grading has been done on Mount Mistake, Hickey s, Whiteside’s, and Conical Hills School roads. The report was approved.
