OFFICIAL FORECAST OVERCAST, BUT IMPROVING The following is the official weather forecast: — A rather -deep depression is now passing eastward off the Dominion. An anti-cyclone of slight intensity covers south-eastern Australia and is moving on to the western Tasman Sea. Indications are for: — Winds.—North-westerly to westerly at first over the northern and northeastern portion of the North Island, but otherwise south-westerlies to southerlies prevailing; force moderate to strong, and rising in places to gale. Seas.—New Zealand waters: Becoming rather rough to rough generally. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate to strong southerly winds and rough seas, but conditions later moderating. Weather.—Cloudy to overcast, with rain at times in most districts; some heavy falls probable about Cook Strait, with thunder and hail in places; temperatures cold, but improving to-day from the west. WEATHER IN DUNEDIN The weather was fine but dull yesterday, and the temperature did not rise above 56deg. The barometer fell to 29.52 in. but rose slightly later, and at midnight stood at 29.60 in. The day was fine but cloudy, with a fresh wind from the west, blowing strong at times. The maximum temperature was 74deg. The barometric pressure fell rapidly, the reading: at 5 p.m. being 29.6 in. WELLINGTON. Dec. 20. The weather to-day was overcast, and rain fell in the morning. There was some improvement in the afternoon. There was a light breeze from the south. The temperatures were cool, the minimum last night being 45.8 deg and the maximum to-day 55.1 deg. At 3.30 p.m. the barometer registered 29.359 in. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 20. Intermittent showers, with one heavy downpour in the morning, fell throughout the day in Christchurch. The sky was heavily overcast. A light southwesterly blew in the afternoon, and the morning was calm. The maximum temperature was 53.1 deg, The baremeter at 5 p.m. registered 29.45 m, and was rising slowly.
