BALCLUTHA Car Destroyed Mr Arthur Butler suffered a serious loss in the early hours of yesterday morning, when a five-seater sedan motor car, which had been standing in the yard at his business premises in Clyde street, was almost totally destroyed by fire, Mr Butler discovered the fire at 2.45 a.m., but the car was by that time practically consumed. Only the engine was found to be intact. The origin of the fire is unknown. The Insurance on the vehicle is by no means equal to the loss suffered. The { Rev. Mr Miller’s Resignation The Rev. A. L. Miller, Presbyterian minister at Balclutha for the past four years, has accepted an appointment to minister to the Chinese in Dunedin under the auspices of the Presbyterian Church. Mr Miller is peculiarly well fitted for the work among the Chinese, as, prior to coming to Balclutha, he had laboured as a missionary of the church in China for a period of 10 years. His resignation will take effect from January 31, and a special meeting of the Clutha Presbytery will be held on Friday to deal with the vacancy. The following commissioners will represent the congregation before the presbytery:—Messrs W. Campbell, J. A. Johnston, J. T. Sutherland, and R. D. Dineen. Footballers Honoured On the occasion of their approaching marriages, Messrs A. F. Greenall and D. Brown, members of the Clutha Club’s Senior football team last season, were entertained at a social evening by club members and supporters, and each was presented with a barometer. Mr C. G. Clark, president of the clirb, occupied the chair and made the presentations. Mr Charles Townley, a prominent member of the Crescent Club, Kaitangata, was also honoured by his club mates on the occasion of his coming marriage, when he will take up his residence in Milton. Mr Townley was asked to accept a dinner service in recognition of the valuable service he had rendered to the club as a player and as a member of the executive. MILTON Personal • Miss Bertha Chalmers, an officer in the Salvation Army stationed at Rotorua, has been visiting her parents (Mr and Mrs R. Chalmers) on furlough, and will leave this week to resume her duties. Mr George F. Duff, who will retire from the service of the Otago Education Board on superannuation, after about 15 years’ service as headmaster at Milburn School, has been presented with a suitcase as a mark of appreciation from his present and former scholars. Transmission of Electricity Commenting on the steady advance in the Otago Electric Power Board’s business, the chairman (Mr A. E. Russell) stated at yesterday’s meeting that the present total length of the board’s main transmission lines was 200 miles -equivalent to the distance from Dunedin to Ashburton. Including the subsidiary reticulation, the total length of transmission line under the board’s jurisdiction was 600 miles

Relaying Water Mains The Milton Borough Council has received advice from Mr G. G. Hunter, secretary of the unemployment division, Department of Labour, that a subsidy of £2 5s per man weekly will be available for the replacement of the borough’s water mains provided the work is commenced with reasonable despatch. As the cost is estimated at about £9OOO, a poll of the ratepayers will be necessary before the raising of a loan can be authorised, and the council is seeking an assurance from the Labour Department that the subsidy will be available when the work Is eventually commenced.
