PICKPOCKETS ACTIVE
WORKING. AMONG CROWDS NUMEROUS LOSSES IN AUCKLAND (Per United Press- Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 19. Pickpockets have come to Auckland for Christmas after working successfully among the race crowds in the south. Already those operating in the city in crowded tram-cars, buses and trains ,have reaped a rich harvest, the amounts stolen ranging from quite small sums up to £9 in bank notes in one instance. Hidden in busy shopping crowds or in vehicles in which there is only standing room, the pickpockets have so far evaded detection. In most cases their victims have not been aware of their losses for some time afterward. The.man.who lost £9 was a passenger in a tramcar bound from the'city to Remuera. The car was crowded and he had to stand on the back platform on which there were several other men, some of whom were forced against him each time the tram stopped and people alighted. The public is warned to be on guard against pickpockets who, in some instances, are able to develop considerable skill.-
