NATIONAL SERVICE
THE VOLUNTARY SYSTEM THREE MONTHS' TRIAL PROPOSED MOTION TABLED IN COMMONS (British Official Wireless) tUnited Press Association) (By Electric Telegraut.- Copyright) RUGBY, Dec. 17. (Received Dec. 18, at 10 p.m.) The debate on the proposals for organising voluntary national service will be resumed in the House of Commons on Tuesday, and a motion has been tabled by the Government —" That the House recognising that the taking of measures to protect the lives and homes of the people at all times transcends in importance all party differences, welcomes the Government's decision to rely upon voluntary services of the people but recommends that the results of the scheme for national service proposed by the Government be reviewed by the House at the end of March." The Government's decision to review at the end of March the results of the scheme for national service on a voluntary basis has aroused keen interest in political circles, particularly among Conservative critics of the voluntary system. The Times says that some of these critics will regard the new motion as a concession to their point of view, but anticipates that others will still persist with amendments in a compulsory scheme. The Ministry of Labour from now on will be entitled the Ministry of Labour and National Service.
