PRICE OF PETROL

A RUMOUR DISPELLED NO INCREASE IN TAX (Peb L'nitep Press AUCKLAND. Dec. 17. Replying to inquiries of the Automobile Association (Auckland) concerning rumours of an increase in the price of petrol, telegrams have been received from Mr Sullivan and Mr Nash. The former states:—"As you are jaware, the price of petrol is fixed by the Government, and cannot be increased without Government authority. There has been no request to me for an increase in the price, and so far as my department is concerned there is no evidence to support the rumour of an early increase in the price." Mr Nash states:—" The Government has not before it any proposal for a further petrol tax or the institution of a horse-power tax."
