BALCLUTHA Scottish Society’s Concert There was an audience of fully 300 at the monthly gathering of the Clutha Scottish Society, held in the Britannia Theatre on Wednesday night. Chief P. A. Watt was piped in by Piper Lindsay Copland, and gave an address of welcome. Junior Chieftain D. Ballantyne officiated as chairman of the concert part of the programme, which opened with a community sing led by Mr N. Bell, the instrumental music being supplied by Mrs Bowcott (piano) and Mr L. Bowcott (trombone). Lovell’s Flat residents provided the rest of the programme as follows: Instrumental trio. Miss Newbigging and party; song, Miss Phyllis Martin; playlet, “ Times Is Changed,” Mrs Camithers and Miss Anderson: song, Mr C. Clarke; recitation, Mrs Dale; song, Mrs Newbigging; playlet, “Jane Ann,” Misses Sutherland and Moffat; song, Mr Landreth; playlet, “The Treasure Hunt.” Mesdames Campbell, Landreth, Mr Camnbell and Miss Anderson. All the items were encored and the concert was voted one of the best yet held under the auspices of the society. Particularly good were the playlets. The usual supper and dance followed. The music for the latter was supplied by the society’s band (Miss Farquhar, Mr B. Hill, and Mr L. Bowcott)

Corner Collision A collision occurred at the corner of James and Argyle streets at dusk on Wednesday evening between the Clutha River Board’s lorry, driven by Mr T. Tsukigawa and a car owned and driven by Mr W. Miller, of Balclutha. The lorry was in James street proceeding south towards Rosebank, and the car was coming along the cross street from the direction of the railway station. The force of the impact was so great when the vehicles met at the corner that the car, which had been struck amidships, was driven some distance through the adjoining fence. The driver was thrown out when it struck the footpath and rolled over several times, but was not seriously injured. The lorry driver was not hurt in any way. The lorry also went through the fence, and when the vehicles came to rest the running board of the car was under the nose of the lorry. This is the corner where two ■taxis collided some weeks ago.

Invercargill Municipal Visit A delegation from the Invercargill City Council, comprising the Mayor (Mr J. R, Hanan), six councillors, the town clerk (Mr Sturman), and the engineer (Mr F. M. Corkrill), visited Balclutha on Wednesday for the purpose of inspecting the new filtration plant at the borough waterworks. The visitors were met and welcomed by the Mayor (Mr J. H. Stevenson) and several members of the local council, and after lunch inspected the plant at the waterworks, with which they expressed themselves well satisfied. Mr Hanan stated that it was hoped in about six months to have a similar filtration plant installed at the Invercargill waterworks, the supply there being obtained by pumping from a well, as in Balclutha. The filtration plant was installed under the advice and direction of Mr Corkrill, who explained and demonstrated its effectiveness.
