THE TURKISH PONTOON
’ TO THE EDITOR
Sir,—As a recent tourist visitor to Dunedin may I venture to direct attention to the Turkish pontoon which stands in the open near the Otago Pioneers’ Hall? The capture of this pontoon in an action in which the New Zealand Expeditionary Force took no small part was a page in the history of this country. The Turks carried out an amazing feat in conveying their pontoons and guns over many miles of waterless desert, and their efforts to block the Suez canal might easily have met with success.
It seems a great pity that the pontoon at Dunedin should be allowed to stand in the open where it is rapidly (ailing into decay. Is there no museum in which it could be housed?—l am. etc., A. T. Anderson.
