Mr W. C. Harley, S.M., left by the Maui Pomare on Tuesday for Samoa, where he will take up the position of judge of the High Court. Mr J. R. McKenzie, who has been on a visit to the United States, returned to New Zealand by the Monterey, He left Wellington for Christchurch last night. Mr A. C. Owen, district electrical engineer of the Southland Electric Power Supply, has been appointed to take charge of the southern power supply area of the North Island. His headquarters will be at Palmerston North, and he expects to leave Invercargill in® about a month’s time. Mr Owen has been in charge of the Southland district since May, 1937, and he has also had experience in England and America. Members of the reporting staffs of the Otago Daily Times and the Evening Star gathered in the City Hotel last evening to bid farewell to Chief Detective J. B. Young, who will shortly leave on transfer to Wellington, Mr D. Thomson, president of the Dunedin Journalists’ Union, presided, and presented Mr Young with a desk set, wishing him every success in his new sphere of work, Mr Young briefly replied. A welcome was also extended to Chief Detective Holmes, who will succeed Chief Detective Young. A northbound passenger by the Union Airways yesterday morning was Mr R. B. Inwood, for Christchurch. Southbound passengers in the afternoon were Messrs R. B. Bannerman, H. F. Sincock, and Miss J. R. Cullen from Christchurch.
