BORING FOR GOLD
THE MANUHERIKIA VALLEY REQUEST BY MR BODKIN (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Aug. 30. A request that the Government should undertake fresh boring in the Manuherikia Valley to investigate possible gold resources there was made by Mr W. A. Bodkin (Opposition, Central Otago) during consideration of the Mines Department estimates in the House of Representatives to-day. Mr Bodkin said that about two years ago boring was carried out in the neighbourhood of St. Bathans and Matakanui, but at that time there was not a machine in the country that was capable of doing the job properly, while there were also difficulties, arising from private ownership. Those private interests had now disappeared, and the land could be taken over either by the employment promotion branch of the Labour Department or by the Mines Department. The boring that had been done in the Matakanui district, Mr Bodkin said, had been rendered valueless owing to the inadequacy of the plant, but more modern plant should now be available, and he suggested that no better work could be undertaken than the investigation of those deep leads.
