(Received Aug. 29, at 9 p.m.) Continuous bombing severed the railway, resulting in Hankow becoming temporarily isolated. The Chinese believe that Hankow will hold out for six months* but foreigners believe it will fall before the middle of November. . The Japanese estimate that 800,000 Chinese are holding Hankow’s double line of defence, but lack artillery to deal with the Japanese naval guns from the Yangtse. The Japanese are mustering their full strength for an attack on Hankow in an attempt to avoid a winter campaign, but they are hampered by heat, sickness and a difficult terrain. CLAIM BY CHINESE VILLAGES RECAPTURED HANKOW, Aug. 28. The Chinese claim a victory on the north bank of’the Yangtse and the recapture of Tsienshan and Taihu, isolating the Japanese at Huangmei.
