MINING STRIKE

THE SOUTHLAND DISPUTE REFERRED FOR ARBITRATION MEN RETURNING TO WORK The Inspector of Awards at Invercargill has advised the Court of Arbitration, now sitting in Dunedin, that both parties in the Southland coal mining dispute, as the result of which the workers in six mines in the Ohai and Nightcaps district have been on strike since last Tuesday, are desirous that the court should settle the matter. As the court has a fixture every day for the remainder of the Dunedin session, some difficulty has been experienced in arranging an appointment, but it has finally been decided that the dispute will be heard at 2.15 p.m. to-morrow. About 400 men will resume work to-day. The shortage of coal had become very acute in parts of Southland, and some merchants in Invercargill were restricting household orders to one bag.
