H. Stevenson) presided at a special meeting of the council last night to fix the rates for the ensuing year. The chairman of the Finance Committee (Cr A. J. Henderson) moved that the estimates as submitted lie confirmed, and that the following rates be struck and levied:— Consolidated rate, IOJd in the £; saptation rate. 12s 6d per service; water rate of 5 per cent, on the annual value. He said that the debit in the general account had increased from £lls to just on £4OO in the last 12 months. Of the credit balance of £I3OO bequeathed to the late council, only £360 was handed on, and, while not criticising the former council, it was 1 obvious that the possession of these funds had enabled the late council to carry on with a lower scale of rating than the council now found necessary. Increased cost of labour and materials, the rise in the Hospital Board levy/ and an increased contribution to the Fire Board were all factors toward rendering the increased rates necesThe motion was seconded by Cr R. Mcßride and carried. A The increases referred to are:—Consolidated rate, from lOd to 10id; and water rate from 2J to 5 per, cent on the annual value. Rugby Football
