Borough Council The first monthly meeting of the newly-elected Alexandra Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Monday evening, the Mayor (Mr W. Bringans) presiding over Councillors W. Hewitt, E. Marslin, E. Russell, T. G. Thow, A. McKellar, A. Parsons, and R. S. Kinnaird. Leave of absence was granted Cr A. E. Ellis. Before commencing the business of the evening, Cr W. Hewitt congratulated the Mayor on his re-election. The Mayor returned thanks and welcomed back to the council table seven of the old council and extended a welcome to Cr Kinnaird, who took his seat for the first time. Cr Kinnaird expressed thanks for the welcome extended to him, and said he would do his best for the welfare of the town.

The Mayor submitted the following nominations for the various committees, these being approved:— Deputy Mayor.—Cr W. Hewitt. Works and Water.—The Mayor (chairman), Crs E. Marslin, A. McKellar and A. E. Ellis, Finance and General.—Crs E. Russell (chairman), E. Marslin, W. Hewitt and A. McKellar.

Hall and Library.—Crs W. Hewitt (chairman), T. G. Thow, A. E. Ellis and E. Russell.

Domain Swimming Baths and Afforestation.—Crs E. Marslin (chairman), Kinnaird, A. Parsons and T. G. Thow.

Amenities, Town Beautifying, Motor Camp, Cemetery and Aerodrome.—Crs A. McKellar (chairman), Kinnaird, Hewitt and Parsons.

The ordinary meeting of the council was held immediately after the special meeting. Mr E. Fletcher Roberts, engineer, wrote stating that he was prepared to undertake the report on the borough waterworks, and estimated that his initial report would cost about £4o. It was decided to proceed with the report forthwith. The Controller of Civil Aviation wrote regarding the licence for the aerodrome, and stated that until certain levelling and clearing works were undertaken, it would not be able to renew the licence.—Referred to the Amenities Committee to furnish a report.

I. Ashworth wrote applying for a lease of a property in the town belt to erect a dwelling house thereon.— Granted at an annual rental of 15s, poplar trees at present growing to be cut and the race left open. The Vincent County Council wrote regarding the centennial memorial.— The Mayor said he had attended a meeting, but no finality had been reached. It was his opinion that they should be allowed to make their own arrangements. The Government subsidy was £1 for every £3 raised. The employment officer, Cromwell, wrote requesting the council to emcloy another three men under scheme No. 13.—There was considerable discussion upon the advisability of employing other than men who had resided in the borough for more than six months, and it was decided to refer the matter to the Works Committee and to advise the Employment Bureau about the residential qualifications considered necessary. It was decided to ask Mr E. Fletcher Roberts to draw up specifications for the tar-sealing of the main highway from the monument to the railway station.

The district traffic Inspector requested the council to make distinguishing marks for parking areas. He considered the lower end of Tarbert street too narrow for parking on both sides, and also requested that cars on the State highway should not be parked at an angle—lt was decided to assist the inspector in the matters brought under notice. The reports of the Alexandra Domain Board and the Alexandra Town Belt Domain Boards were approved. Miniature Rifle Club The third annual meeting of the Alexandra Miniature Rifle Club was held on Monday evening, Mr A. Cameron presiding. The annua! report made reference to the death of the president (Mr S. C. Wells), and the loss also of the secretary (Mr W. A. Leitch), who had left the district on account of ill-health. The aggregate prize winners for last season wore as follows:—Milne Bremner Cup (best aggregate score off (he rifle), J. Lunn; handicap aggregate trophy, I. Frater; gold button, J. Lunn; silver button, A. Cameron; bronze button. J. Hardy. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:—Patron, Dr A. E. Gladstone; president. Mr J. Lunn; senior vice-president. Mr R. G. Simpson; vice-presidents—Messrs H. G. Hesson, L. H. Denniston, and the Rev. Father O’Connell;- committee— Messrs A. Cameron. J. O'Kane, H. Hesson, R. Henderson M. G. Maitland, and J. Hardy; secretary and treasurer, Mr R. Reidy; armourer, Mr R. G. Simpson; auditor, Mr L. H. Denniston. It was decided to hold an opening shoot on June 8, and the usual weekly shoots on Mondays. Memorial Tablet At a meeting of the various organisations connected wdth St. Enoch’s Presbyterian Church on Thursday

evening it was unanimously decided to perpetuate the memory of Mr Archibald Ashworth by erecting in the church a memorial plaque. Mr Ashworth was superintendent of the Sunday school for close on 30 years and an elder for a considerable period. It was considered that a number of ex-pupils of Mr Ashworth would desire to contribute to this memorial, and it was agreed that the cost be met by voluntary subscriptions.
