Winter Show No entry from Waimate will be made in the district hay competition at the South Canterbury Industrial Exhibition and Winter Show at Timaru this year. This decision was reached at a sparsely-attended meeting in the 1 Borough Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. The Mayor (Mr G. Dash) presided. After a short discussion th£ chairman stated that most of those comprising the executive last year would be unable to take an active part in organising the exhibit this year. Government Houses A start has been made with the building of the first State houses in Waimate, and workmen are engaged in laying the foundations of two residences in the section on the corner of Uppqr High street and Belt street. The present contract, which provides for the erection of 10 houses, is in the hands of Messrs Maynard and Armstrong, of Oamaru. The remaining houses are to be erected on the corner of Belt street and Manse street and in King and Opie streets. Vital Statistics The vital statistics for the five months ended May 31, 1938, for the Waimate district are as follows (last year’s figures being given in parentheses)Births 49 (52). marriages 27 (22), deaths 19 (25) Licensing of Motoi Vehicles The number of motor vehicle relicences at the Waimate Post Office as at May 31 numbered 1016, as compared with 892 at the corresponding period last year, an increase of nearly 14 per cent., and it is expected that a further 300 vehicles will be reliconsed before the end of this week Earth Tremor An earthquake, .vhich apparently was not felt in other districts, occurred in the Waihao Downs, Redcliff, and Waihaorunga districts about 1.45 p.m. on Saturday. Residents state that the tremor was heralded by a deep rumpling sound, after which the earth took on a gentle swaying movement lasting for several seconds. The movement was sufficient to set electric lights swinging, and a swaying movement could be seen in high wireless poles. No damage resulted New Wing for Hospital Completed Erected at a cost of about £3OOO, the new wing at the Waimate Hospital, which accommodates principally the recently-acquired X-ray plant and a new operating theatre is now in full occupation. All the constructional work has been completed, and only some furnishings and additional items of equipment remain to be installed The structure has been erected near the east wing of the main hospital building behind the children’s veranda, and has proved a valuable addition to the facilities available at the institution.

Rugby Sub-unioi Two teams notified their withdrawal from the sub-union’s competitions at a meeting of the Management Committee of the Waimate Rugby Subunion. The Makikihi Club wrote advising that it had decided to withdraw from the Senior B Competition, and the Old Boys Club notified the withdrawal of its junioi team, The South Canterbury Union wrote inquiring whether the Waimate Sub-union would prefer to have a representative game with South Canterbury played at Waimate or a trial game Town v. Country. The meeting agreed to reply asking for a trial match to be played in Waimate On the suggestion of Mr Kilworth it was decided to apply to the Borough Council for a shower bath to be installed at Manchester Park.
