NOVICE'S LUCK

THE ENGLISH DERBY HON. PETER BEATTY’S SUCCESS DESCRIPTION OF RACE (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) ' LONDON, June 1. Winning the Derby was novice’s luck. The Hoh. Peter Beatty, a brother of Lord Beatty, has only been racing a short while. He recently bought the winner, Bois Roussel, for £BOOO. Bois Roussel had not previously run in England, and had only one race in France, where he won against 'll field consisting of non-winners.

Enormous crowds cheered the royal party on their arrival at Epsom, where the going was good, despite heavy rain. Licence went away well from the start, and led till at the foot of the hill, where Halcyon Gift dashed into the lead, Pasch at this stage lying comfortably in fourth position. At the top of the bend Halcyon Gift was put in front by two lengths, being followed by Chatsworth, Pasch, and Scottish Union. The four lengths lead which Halcyon Gift held at the end of three-quarters of a mile was reduces to two lengths at Tattenharn Corner, where Cave Man and Mirza II were coming up rapidly. Overwhelming Rim Scottish Union led into the straight with Pasch challenging. Scottish Union looked a certainty till Bois Roussel with an overwhelming run from the back, caught him and won going away over the last stage of the race. Pasch followed Scottish Union into third place. ~ , , Besides the place-getters the starters were:—
