MANCHESTER UNITY
N.G. , Bro. E. L. Brown presided over the meeting of Loyal Cromwell Lodge, being greeted by a large attendance of members. Routine business being disposed of, reports were received in reference to the official visit to Loyal Roxburgh. The permanent secretary was instructed to communicate with Loyal Roxburgh expressing appreciation of its hospitality, and extending an invitation to visit Loyal Cromwell in the near future. A party of brethren from Loyal Upper Clutha was also present at the Roxburgh meeting. One brother submitted two candidates for membership of the Order. The attention of brethren was drawn to the fact that during the winter months meetings would commence at ?.30 p.m.
A full attendance greeted N.G. Bro. R. Dickson at the fortnightly meeting of Loyal Caversham. One funeral claim was passed for payment, and dispensary delegates submitted a report of recent proceedings. P.P.G.M. Bro. John Wilson was congratulated on his appointment as a trustee of the United Friendly Societies’ Dispensary Board, and also on his election to a seat on the Dunedin City Council. Nominations for office were opened, and adjourned for a fortnight. A motion of sympathy was passed to the relatives of P.G. Bro. Rodney V. Russell, members standing in silence. The N.G. gave a resume of proceedings at the recent visit to Loyal Middlemarch Lodge. The lodge adjourned at -8.30 for dancing. The following officers were appointed at the half-yearly summoned meeting of Loyal United Juvenile Lodge:— 1.P.N.G., Bro. Knowles; N.G., Bro. Gibson; V.G., Bro. Purdue; E.S., Bro. Campbell; warden, Bro. Andergon; guardian, Bro. Harraway. There was a good attendance of members, and visiting brethren, including four members of the Juvenile Council. • President Bro. McLaren, assisted by visiting officers,” conducted the installation of officers. Representatives of Loyal Albion juvenile branch, Loyal Caversham, Albion, and Prince of Wales Lodges were in attendance.
Loyal Tuapeka Pioneer Lodge, Lawrence. held its monthly meeting on May 26, N.G. Bro. Richardson presiding over a good attendance. Correspondence, which was heavy, provoked considerable discussion. The Prov. C.S. advised that a special meeting of the Standing Committee would be held in the district chambers, Dunedin, on Thursday. June 16, at 8 p.m. Four candidates for admission were initiated with (he usual formalities, the ceremony being impressively carried out. The now members were addressed by PP.G.M Bro, A. Hart and P.G. Bro. Clark. A committee was appointed to arrange for and conduct a social evening for the entertainment of members wives and women friends. The halfyearly summoned meeting will be held nn June 21, when officers for the ensuing term will be appointed.
The special meeting of Loyal Middlemarch Lodge, called for the presentation of the District Efficiency Shield, was well attended by over 100 Oddfellows, the following lodges being represented:—Loyal Victoria, Queen of Maniotbto. Princess Mary, Maniototo, Balfour, Winton. Outram. Milton. Mosgiel, Prince of Wales, Caversham, Albion, Dunedin, and Hand and Heart. Regret was expressed that an urgent call had been received by the Prov. G.M. Bro. Sellar to return to Dunedin. N G Sis. H. M. Simpson welcomed the ’ visitors, the District Executive being represented by Prov. D.G.M. Bro. E. Ransome and P.P.G.M. Bro. P. W. Stabb. The presentation of the shield was made by the Prov. D.G.M., who congratulated the Middlemarch Lodge on having won it three years in succession. Bro. Stabb later presented emblematical certificates to P.G's Bros. R. M. Robertson. W. W. Garrett, J. Alien, and Andrew Beattie, and commended the lodge for its keenness and efficiency. A dance was held afterwards. P.G. Bro. A. Guild proving an efficient M.C. On the Sunday morning members and visiting brethren attended divine service at the Anglican Church, the officiating clergyman being the Rev. Mr Andrews-Baxter, of Dunedin.
The Loyal Valley Lodge has challenged the Loyal Centenary Lodge to a debate on Monday. June 13. On the same evening a degree meeting will be held at 7.30 p.m., and sister dodges are invited to participate by sending officers desirous of taking the minor degrees.
