THE DERBY
ENGLISH CLASSIC WON BY BOIS ROUSSEL (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, June 1. (Received June 2, at 2 a.m.) The Derby was run at Epsom today. Following was the result of the race:— DERBY STAKES, Sweepstakes of £IOO each, with £3OOO added; three-year-olds; colts 9.0, fillies 8.9. One mile and a-half. Leon Volterra’s br c BOIS ROUSSEL, by Vatout —Plucky Liege, 9.0 (E. C. Elliott) .. 1 Jas. V. Rank’s b c SCOTTISH UNION, by Cameronian — Trustful, 9.0 (B. Carslake) .. 2 H. E. Morriss’s b c PASCH, by Blandford —Pasca, 9.0 (G. Richards) 3
The stake for the English Derby was approximately £IO,OOO made up of forfeits and £3OOO added money. The race is confined to entire colts and fillies, the former carrying 9.0, and fillies 8.9. The most recent quotations on the race showed that Pasch, who won the Two Thousand Guineas a few weeks back, was a firm favourite at 2 to 1, and it was probable his price yesterday was even shorter. Scottish Union, who was second to him in the Guineas, seemed to be going out of favour, as he receded to 14 to 1, and Portmarnock, who was one of the best of the two-year-olds last season, was only third favourite at 9 to 1, second choice being Golden Sovereign, who recently won the Newmarket Stakes. Last season Golden Sovereign was among the best of the two-year-olds, and won the Gimcrack Stakes as well as a maiden race at Kempton Park. He, however, was third to Portmarnock and Mirza II in the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster. Golden Sovereign was bred in Ireland, and was purchased there for Sir Abe Bailey for 2700 guineas, the highest price ever paid for a yearling in Ireland. His Majesty the King had his first representative in the Derby yesterday, the Foxlaw colt Licence, who, however, had not shown any form and had not been mentioned in prerace discussions.
