EMPIRE'S KEY MAN
TRIBUTES TO SIR MAURICE HANKEY OTHER POSTS RELINQUISHED LONDON, May 31. In addition to relinquishing the secretaryship of the Caly.net, Sir Maurice Hankey, who will join the directorate of the Suez Canal Company, has resigned from the secretaryship of the Committee of Imperial Defence and the clerkship of the Privy Council. Probably no public servant has ever been accorded such tributes. The entire press agrees that this is the end of an epoch. This Australian, who has long been known as the Empire’s key man, has received compliments worthy of the greatest Prime Minister. Nothing is 'more significant among his great achievements in recent years than his powers of assisting successive Prime Ministers to straighten out muddles.
