BRITAIN'S DECISION NO ASSURANCE FROM JAPANESE ESTIMATE TABLED IN HOUSE PROVISION FOR TWO VESSELS I (United Piess Associationi (By Electric I’cleKiaph C.’oDvmtlrt) LONDON, May 31. The Australian Associated Press' understands that during the past six weeks Britain has repeatedly sought a gesture from Tokio that the Japanese will not exceed the 35,000ton limit in the construction of battleships. The Japanese, however, have not given the slightest clue regarding their intentions. In consequence of the attitude of the Japanese, a supplementary estimate was tabled in the House of Commons to-day, making provision for two capital ships, the tonnage of which will exceed 35,000 tons, and which will be equipped with 16-inch guns. It is expected that three similar ships will be laid down later to enable a complete squadron. This programme is in addition to the five 35,000-ton ships with 14-inch guns already under construction. FIRST “ FLYING BATTLESHIP ” REVOLVING GUN TURRETS LONDON, May 26. The first “ flying battleship ” was mored on the River Medway (Kent) yesterday ready for trials, It will be the flagship of the -fiew fleet of large airboats that are still under construction. These boats will be capable of ocean cruises of 3000 miles, and will carry bombs and guns fitted in revolving gun turrets, like those on battleships. The machines will be built by Short Brothers, and will be known as the Sunderland type. It is believed tli at they will cruise at 200 miles an hour.
