WEATHER IN MAY

RECORDINGS OF THE MONTH HIGH SUNSHINE TOTAL The weather in Dunedin during the month of May was mild? and the total of sunshine compared more than favourably' with that for the same month in recent years. The rainfall total was also considerably below the average for May over the past seven years. There were no very heavy falls of rain, .28in on May 14, May 26, and May 28 being the heaviest falls recorded. The total was 1.66 in, compared with 2.90 in in April and 3.35 in in May of last year. Rain fell on 12 days. There were 140 hr 55min of sunshine for the month, compared with. 96hr 15min for April, 87hr lOmin for May of last year, and 120 hr 42min for May. 1936. There were only five days on which no sunshine was recorded. The average maximum temperature for May was 60deg, and the average minimum was 46deg. In the previous month the average maximum was 63deg and the average minimum was 52deg, while those for May of last year were 56deg and 41deg respectively, indicating a milder variety of weather. The highest temperature recorded in May, 1937, was 66deg, and the lowest was 30dpg. Last month the highest was 70deg and the lov/est 38deg. For practically the whole of the month south-westerly breezes prevailed. and on one or two occasions the wind was of some considerable force. For the greater part of the time, however, light airs to moderate breezes prevailed, and there were several occasions when calm weather was experienced for several days on end. Pressure was for the most part well over 30in, but the few spells of inclement weather were accompanied by falls in pressure, on one occasion to under 29.40 in. RAINFALL RECORDS
