MEAT IMPORTATION
CABLE MESSAGE DENIED ALLEGED GOVERNMENT PURCHASE (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, May 26. A vigorous denial has been given to the cable message from London on Tuesday that the Government would begin soon to purchase 250,000 tons of United Kingdom grown meat to place in cold storage. New Zealand meat producers, in view of this announcement, anticipated a rise in the price of their produce, but inquiries in London by New Zealand exporting firms have revealed no justification for the report. The significance of such a purchase and the effect it would have on the demand for the colonial production is evident when it realised that 250,000 tons of meat is equal to about 9,000,000 carcasses of mutton and lamb.
