WAIMATE Walmate County Council Mr J. Bitchener was unanimously reelected chairman at the annual meeting of the Waimate County Council. The following appointments were made:—Representative on the Timaru High School Board, Cr J. J. Dickson; representative on the District Highways Council, Cr H. B. S. Johnstone; Finance Committee, —Crs A. S. Elworthy, W. Lindsay, A. N. Hayes and R. Sinclair. Tenders for the carting of metal from the county crusher were considered in committee, after which the chairman reported that none of the tenders received had been accepted. The engineer had been instructed to call fresh tenders, and a sub-committee consisting of the chairman and Crs Lindsay, Whatman and Johnstone, had been appointed to consider tenders with power to act. The chairman reported that after long delay, work had commenced on the Morven drainage scheme and the project should be completed in good time. Mr and Mrs J. Bltchencr Honoured A pleasant function took place before the meeting of the Waimate County Council recently, when the members made a surprise presentation to the chairman, Mr J. Bitchener, who celebrated his golden wedding recently. On behalf of the council, Cr H. B. S. Johnstone made the presentation of an electric mixing bowl to Mr and Mrs Bitchener. Cr Johnstone referred to the striking record of public service achieved by Mr Bitchener; who had sat at the council table as a member and qs chairman for 30 years. Public men, he said, owed much to their wives, and he was happy to include Mrs Bitchener in their tribute to that fine record of service. The speaker conveyed the congratulations of the council and staff to Mr and Mrs Bitchener on the celebration of their golden wedding, and expressed a hope that they would be spared to enjov many another anniversary. All the councillors present spoke and joined in the wish that the couple would be long spared to enjoy their hapny married life. Mr Bitchener suitably replied. Bodkin, M.P. for the district, addressed a political meeting at Miller’s Flat on Monday night. He was well received, and at the close of his address was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. CLYDE Fruit Industry A large number of local fruitgrowers attended the apple packing and gfading demonstration given by the departmental officers (Messrs Williams and Nottage) at Mr W. Campbells orchard. Mr Williams went through the regulations, making all portions clear to the growers, and his assistant demonstrated how to pack and grade the different sizes of fruit. The number of packers in the district being very limited, it was decdied to form classes for the tuition of those desiring to learn this side of the industry. About 20 decided to take the opportunity, and two classes will be held as soon as the necessary arrangements can be made. Domain Board The annual meeting of the Dunstan Domain Board was held in the secretary’s office on Monday night, Mr W A Harlow presiding and members present being Messrs J. Holt, W. Gye, P Miller and J. L. Davidson. The annual report and certified balance sheet were read and adopted. Mr Harlow was re-elected chairman. It was decided to continue with the tree planting and to remove some of the trees from the nursery and also to secure more young trees from Queenstown. The Hockey Club was granted the use of the football ground. The secretary reported that there were very few rents outstanding. Social Club The attendances at the weekly meetings of the Social Club are being well maintained. Last week the winners of the euchre tournament were Mrs Davis and Mr H. E. Stevens. Rifle Club Jack Davidson recaptured the rifle button from his brother at the Miniature Rifle Club’s last meeting. G. EASTERN SOUTHLAND The Greenvale Tragedy A verdict that death was due to a hsemorrhage of the left thigh femoral as a result of a wound caused by a bullet discharged while deer shooting by John Alexander Allen, who was under the impression that he was shooting at a deer in the scrub, was returned by the district coroner (Mr Andrew Martin) when the adjourned inquest into the death of James Ralph Clark, who was killed while deer stalking at Greenvale on May 1, was concluded at Gore on Wednesday.
