THE DEPUTY MAYOR OF GREEN ISLAND

to rut Kintob Sir,—As a worker and resident of Green Island one must, in common with all residents claiming to be endowed with an average measure of the finer feelings of manhood, deprecate the utter lack of appreciation of the ethics of British sportsmanship shown by those new councillors of Green Island Borough who opposed the nomination of Councillor Tomkins as Deputy Mayor. In opposing the Mayor’s nomination of Councillor Tomkins, these new councillors not only showed a very definite lack of courtesy to their Mayor and Councillor Tomkins, but also to the public of Green Island whom they represent. Whilst in some cases in the past recognition has been given to the councillor receiving the highest number of votes, this is invariably not carried out when that person has not previously rendered the community any noticeable service. In extenuation of the action of these new councillors one can only surmise that success at the poll and their initial entry into public affairs have had. we sincerely hope, a temporary unbalancing of their finer judgment, which, we also hope, will be shortly restored so that they will during the forthcoming three years carry out their duty with a dignity and business-like bearing which the office demands. Once they have become conversant with the past history of councillors who have so faithfully served the borough, they will, I feel sure, realise the sterling work which Councillor Tomkins has done in their interests and the interests of the borough, and none will regret more than they their unfortunate decision at their initial meeting. In common wit... I am sure, a large section of the Green Island public. I fee! the time is long overdue when appreciation should be acknowledged of the very fine service rendered to public affair'in Green Island by Mr Tomkins, sen and Mr Tomkins, jun.. and their wives who have likewise taken more than a passing interest in the affairs of tin l community. Expressions of appreciation of their service have undoubtedly boon noticeable by their absence, but arc nevertheless very real in the minds of all those who at all limes arc without, bias, prepared to give credit where credit is due. —I am. etc..
