MEETING OF NEW COUNCIL MR J. CROSS ELECTED CHAIRMAN The first meeting of the new Peninsula County Council was held yesterday, and was attended by Crs J. Cross, T. S. Edmonds, J. J. Nyhon, D. J. Robertson, J. W. Harbrow, J. T. Irvine, D. Rutherford, W V. Sturmer, and W. Brookman. ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN Two nominations were received for the position of chairman for the ensuing year—Crs J Cross and J. W. Harbrow, the former being elected by five votes to four. A minute was passed expressing appreciation of the services of the past chairman, Mr H. Macandrew, and two retiring councillors, Messrs W D. Stewart and J Hellyer, and the chairman welcomed Crs Rutherford, Stunner and Brookman, who were attending their first meeting CORRESPONDENCE

Miss J. Henderson drew the attention of the council to the dangerous state of the upper end of Roger street, Wharfdale. —It was decided that the matter should be attended to. Mr A. Stanley, Waverley, applied for permission to open Buccleugh terrace for the purpose of laying a water pipe.—The question was referred to Cr Stunner and the engineer. with power to act. Mrs B. Woods, Vauxhall. wrote complaining that the' council had not yet done anything to stop the water from the culvert flowing into her property.—The matter was referred to the engineer, with power to act. Mr F Famey, inspector for thq county, Department of Health, wrote asking if the council objected to a section-holder at Harrington Point placing a disused railway carriage on his land to be used as a crib.—No objection was raised.

Mr P. Keller, the board’s representative on the Nos. 16 and 17 District Highways Council, wrote asking the council to norrfinate a representative to the council as early as possible.—The chairman was appointed as the council’s representative.

Mr J. A. Moloney, Waverley, asked the council to divert or remove a drain which came out on a section on which he desired to have a house erected.—The matter was left in the hands of the engineer and the member for the riding. The secretary of the Otago Harbour Board (Mr J. Repton) forwarded for approval, pldns of proposed boatsheds and sliptvays to be erected by Mr W. T, Clarke (Lower Portobello) and Mr S. Ikin (Cove). —Both plans were approved .provided that, in the first instance, the application was referred to the Main Highways Board. In reply to a circular from the New Zealand County Councils’ Industrial Union of Employers, the council stated that the permanent staff working under award conditions totalled 11, and that there was no award governing the conditions of the county engineer (Mr S, G. Paterson). In reply to a request by Mr James Black, Broad Bay, it was decided to state that the grant for forming the portion of Camp road was made available only on the condition that the proposed deviation were made. Difficulties had arisen over the acquisition of the land required to make the deviation so that the council had decided not to purchase the land.

The secretary of the Peninsula Motor Services, Ltd. (Mr G. S. Kirby) wrote asking the council to give consideration to the widening of the corner of District road, Macandrew Bay, at the Macandrew street intersection where the company had just completed a six-bus garage.—The matter was left in the hands of the chairman, the member for the riding and the engineer with power to act. Mr R. G. Clearwater, Wickcliffe Bay, wrote asking the council to fence the Cape road through the property of Mr D. Ellison, Cape Saunders.—Declined.

Mr R. Kay, Littlabourne road, drew the attention of the council to the fact that a deep hole had been caused at the buttress of the Tomahawk Lagoon bridge by the scour of the water and it constituted a danger to children.—Received M'r A. G. Neill wrote asking the council to have the road drains adjacent to his property at Hooper’s Inlet cleaned out so that the water could get away.—The matter was referred to the engineer. ENGINEER’S REPORT

The engineer (Mr S. G. Paterson) reported as follows on the work done during the month; — Otago Heads Riding.—A total of 54 chains of the Cape Saunders Lighthouse road has been shaped and partly metalled. Water tables have been cleaned and general surfacing done on the Portobello-Har-rington Point road. Portobello Riding.—Work is proceeding on the contract for removal of the slips on the Fortobello-Cape Saunders road. The contractor for the, widening of Kinnaird road intends to commence work immediately on the sea wall. Sandymount Riding.—The shoulders have been cut on Seal Point road and the water tables cut out with the grader, Highcliff Riding.—Water tables have been cut out on Braid road and patching of potholes done. Shoulders have been cut on Camp road and water tables cleaned Patching has been done on Paradise road Foglights have been renewed on the High road and the standards have been painted. Tomahawk Riding.—Lupins nave been cut on the Main road The creek on Valley road has been cleaned out. North-East Harbour Riding.— Marne street Waverley has been scarified and bladed to shape, and given a coat of metal. The Macandrew Bay end of the Marine Parade has been widened for a short distance to permit vehicular access. Maintenance work has been done on Morrison street. Broad Bay Riding.—Material left from the cutting of the water tables by the grader has been removed, and drains cut to carry off surplus water. , Grader.—The grader has been employed on the following roads; Cape Saunders Lighthouse road. 34 hours; Braid road, 8J; Seal Point road, 82; Marne street, 8J; Camp road, 8i; Portobello-Cape Saunders road, 4; Riddells-Hooper’s Inlet road, 4J; High road, 23; Tomahawk road, 11; Portobello-Harrington Point road, BJ. The report was adopted. RANGER’S REPORT The county ranger (Mr E. Campbell) reported that he had found six cows and eight calves wandering on county roads during the month. — Noted.
