A SENSITIVE PLANT

LABOUR AND THE PRESS GENEROUS TREATMENT ACCORDED (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 19. The suggestion that the Government was uncommonly sensitive to criticism, was made by Mr J. G. Coates, addressing constituents .at Warkworth. “ Labour members complain bitterly about the press.” he said. “In my experience I have never known the Government to receive from the press of New Zealand such generous treatment as has been accorded the Labour Government. I have been in active politics longer than any present Minister, and I can say quite definitely that not one of them has had nearly as much criticism as I have had directed at me.”

Referring to the concessions made to newspapers for telegraphic rates, Mr Coates said the rates in New Zealand were considerably higher than in England. “ The newspapers have every right to distinguish between propaganda and news. It is for the press to express public opinion as it sees it.”
