COMPETITIONS SOCIETY
THE FORTHCOMING FESTIVAL THREE JUDGES APPOINTED The forthcoming session of the Dunedin Competitions Society promises well from the point of view of entries for the various sections, according to advice received yesterday from the secretary (Mr E. C. Reynolds). Among the judges already appointed are Dr Ford and Dr I,yon. who will supervise the instrumental and vocal sections respectively. They are both examiners for the Trinity College of Music, London, which has acknowledged the national aims of the Dunedin Competitions Society by allotting its examiners to act as judges in the Competitions for the past three years. In addition to the Grand Opera Aria contest, there will be a Gilbert and Sullivan section, the chief piano solo competition for the Moller Trophy, and the firms’ choirs’ section, while entirely new items included this year will be the competition for Messrs Collard and Collard’s (London) cup, which is allotted for a piano concerto (two pianos), and which Is exciting a great amount of interest. The ladies’ choir section, another innovation, is also attracting a considerable amount of attention.
The verse-speaking choir for competitors under 18 years and the secondary school girls’ choirs’ sections are certain to produce good entries. The judges for the past two sessions have commented favourably upon the items, and it is anticipated they will be well represented. Mr J. W. Bailey, of Auckland, ha? again been appointed as elocution judge. The judge for the dancing sections has not yet been appointed, and inquiries are being made by the committee as to the suitability of several of the applicants for the position.
