The May meeting of the Middlemarch Institute was presided over by Mrs Aubrey. The motto was “ Don't look at the hill, climb it,” and the rollcall was, "Article for stall, or bran tub bazaar.” A demonstration on the renewing of old ornaments was given by Miss Jesson and Mrs Polaschek, and Mrs Craighead gave a travel talk. The competitions resulted; Thrift article— Mrs White I, Mrs Cunningham 2, Mrs Hall 3; sultana bun —Mrs Jones 1. Mrs White 2, Mrs MacGregor 3. The Popotunoa Institute met on Tuesday last, Mrs Sanders presiding. The motto was: “ Rest not —life is sweeping by; go and dare before you die.” Miss B. Collins was appointed delegate tc attend the conference in Wellington. The roll call was Imitate the cry of an animal.” It was decided that a card party and dance be held on May 21. A letter was read from a link in Loudonn Hill Institute, Scotland. The banner, the work of Miss Collins, Mrs Simmers, and Mrs McKenzie, was on display. Mrs A Sparrow (Taumata) gave a most interesting demonstration on soft toys. A dialogue by Misses H. Watkins and B Collins followed, and Mrs Robertson (Taumata) read some jokes from a book. Mrs H. Nelson, an ex-member, was present. The hostesses were Mr? Melton and Miss Ross.

Mrs Lang presided over the meeting of the Waikouaiti Institute on Wednesday last. The motto was “A good beginning makes a good ending/* and the roll-call was “Your earliest recolleclion of your school days,” The competitions resulted: Best article made from cardboard—Mrs Jenkins 1; best article made from sugar bag—Mrs Leckie 1. Mrs W. Gilchrist reported on the conference of the Mid-Otago Federation, and an instructive address was given by Miss Bell. Mrs Lang extended a welcome to four new members and two visitors The hostesses were Mesdames C. Aitcheson and Jenkins and Miss Maxwell.

At the monthly meeting of the Glenavy Institute a motion of sympathy with Mrs Duff in the death of her sister was passed, members standing in silence. A discussion took place on the proposal to form a federation for the southern part of South Canterbury Mesdames A. Cuthbertson and Elliott reported on the conference at Geral dine. A committee was formed to cooperate with the Library Committee in arranging for a bazaar to be held next month in aid of the funds. The competitions resulted as follows: — General —Mrs Dickson 1, Mrs I. Cuth bertson 2. Bloom-Miss J. McLean 1 Mrs Cuthbertson 2.

A very interesting and novel meeting of the Waiareka branch was held on Wednesday last, when several visitors were present. The meeting wa? conducted entirely by the single members. Miss Lambie was in the chair, Miss M. Dewar acted as secretary, and Miss Williamson presided at the piano. Mrs Dowthwaite gave the motto, and the roll call was “A cure for a cold.” Miss McNaught gave a delightful description on her trip to Africa The competitions resulted: —Button-hole worked in 10 minutes—Mrs Meyer 1, Mrs Hunter 2, Mrs Watson 3 Three chrysanthemums—Mrs Magon 1, Mrs Milne 2, Miss B, Dewar 3. The euchre evenings, which are to be held each fortnight, commenced on April 30, there being a large attendance for the opening night. The winners were: Miss Symington and Mr H Williams
