HELIUM FOR ZEPPELINS
AMERICAN BAN ON 'EXPORTS PRESIDENT’S DECLARATION WASHINGTON, May 11. (Received May 12, at 11.30 p.m.) It has been announced that President Roosevelt feels himself powerless under law to override Mr Ickes’s objection to helium being supplied to Germany for airships although the five other members of the cabinet of the National Munitions Control Board do not agree with his conention that the quantity contemplated for sale to Germany is of military importance and thus not exportable. The sale is possible only if the board unanimously approves it. Dr Eckener, in a statement, expressed keen disappointment -with the President’s decision and said he did not see how.it will be possible to maintain the operation of Zeppelin traffic. He fears it will be necessary to. abandon the service, which will eritail dismissal of the trained personnel. “It means the death sentence of commercial lighter than air craft.”
