MR SCOLLAY RE-ELECTED MAYOR THE NEW BOROUGH COUNCIL The Mayoral election for the Borough of Port Chalmers was won by the sitting Mayor. Mr T. Scollay, who, standing in the interests of the Labour Party, secured a majority of almost 300 votes. Voting was not quite so heavy as was the case at the previous election. The results were as follows: SCOLLAY, Thomas .. • ■ <>97 Watson, Herbert Spencer .. 403 A crowd of several hundred gathered outside the Port Chalmers Town Hall to hear the result, and the announcement by the returning officer (Mr i_. Blackman) that Mr Scollay had been re-elected was greeted with applause. Mr Scollay thanked the electors tor returning him to office, and said he would endeavour to justify their, continued confidence in him as Mayor, He had stood on this occasion as the representative of a party, and the electors. in returning him, had shown their confidence in his party. During his last term of office the council had cut down expenditure and had reduced the overdraft, and at the same time it had effected many improvements in the borough.'mainly in regard to the roads. That was only the beginning of the programme of improvements he intended to see brought about, and if the people had given him a progressive council he would make the borough sound financially and a better place to live in. ~ _ Mr Watson congratulated Mr Scollay on his success, and said he would continue to be a capable Mayor. Mr Watson also congratulated Mr Scollay and Mr A. Campbell on their election to the Otago Harbour Board. A few years ago, he continued, the beard’s debt had amounted to £50.000, but the retiring council had reduced it to £40,000. It had been working on the right linos, and he trusted that the new council would do the same.
