MR J. J. MARLOW RE-ELECTED MAYOR “BLUE TICKET” RETURNED TO COUNCIL With full Citizens’ and Labour tickets in the field, the elections for the St. Kilda mayoralty and Borough Council aroused considerable public interest, and from 7 o’clock last evening until about 11 o’clock, when the final council returns were announced, a crowd of some hundreds was asemblcd outside the St. Kilda Town Hall. Mr J. J. Marlow, the retiring Mayor, was re-elected by a substantial majority. the votes recorded in his favour totalling over twice as many as those polled in favour of the Labour candidate (Mr J. Robinson). The poll for the mayoral contest was a good deal heavier than last year, when 3002 electors out of 5200 registered their votes. On this occasion the total or; the roll was approximately the same, and of these 3352 voted. The following arc the details of the polling:— ‘MARLOW. Mr Marlow said he had worked for many years on behalf of St. Kilda, and he was proud to know that he had the continued confidence of the ratepayers. which he would do his best to justify. He had always tried to conduct the business of the council with strict impartiality and with a freedom from any party bias. St Kilda was one of the finest boroughs in New Zealand, and it would be his policy to keep it so without increasing the burden on the ratepayers. In conclusion. Mr Marlow expressed appreciation of the clean, gentlemanly fight put up by Mr Robinson. Mr Robinson congratulated Mr Marlow on his victory. There had been nothing but good feeling in the campaign between him and his opponent, he said, and the fight had been a good clean one.
