The Military Spokesman announced that China's Bth Red army had begun to retreat westward of the Yellow River to Shensi, following the loss of the border stronghold Chungtu, thus cutting off supplies from Shensi. Several Chinese battalions were trapped in the Lungshihsien area. Masses of dead around Pingyang suggest that the Chinese lost half their strength. Shansi official statistics show that the Japanese 4o March 1 had destroyed 764 Chinese aeroplanes and had lost 78 of their own. MANCHUKUOAN DIVISIONS FIVE JOIN CHINESE HANKOW, Mar. 3. Chinese sources report that five Manchukuoan Japanese divisions at Paotow mutinied «and joined the Chinese.
