THE COMPENSATED PRICE

TO THE EDITOR Sir,—l had and have no disposition to dspute the appropriateness of "Woodpile Nigger's" nom de plume. It is too evidently appropriate, though perhaps not in the way the writer meant. His affinities and leanings are quite evident. He is zealous for the perpetuation of the present system, particularly for the perpetuation of the monopoly of credit as at present operating. "The whole scheme," he writes in his first letter, " is a scheme of the Douglas Credit reformers to hoodwink the farmer into believing he will get something which he will not have to pay for himself, by taxation or the formation of credit outside the banks." Scandalous cunning on the part of the Douglas Credit reformers! Highly reprehensible in reformers of anv description. This "Nigger," like so many other benighted people in the community' believes firmly that money is a tangible commodity, of which there is only a certain amount—not enough by a long way to satisfy everybody, human nature being fundamentally greedy and selfish—and that it is sacrilege to suggest any modification of the position, no matter how reasonable. It is as well for him to promise to "say no more," since in view of the present state of the world, the defence of his position is, to the least of it, difficult.—l am, etc.. Dunedin. March 3. Truth.
