THE Otago Daily Times. "Inveniam viam aut faciam.” [Established November 15, 1861.] DUNEDIN, TUESDAY, MARCH 5, 1867.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO

We have been favored with a letter from Waikawa, which was brought by the Taiaroa, steamer, on her last trip, i The writer is, we believe, to be thoroughly relied on; and he confirms what we stated a few days ago, that Waikaia does not offer any inducements for a visit. We extract from the letter, the following:—'This place is not looking so well as it was when you were here. Some of the parties have left; and there are only a few claims that will pay wages. There are only thirty people working here now; and I don't see any show for more, unless something is got in the bush. I would advise you not to come here on any account at present." The Provincial Government having projected the opening of a track between Lake Wanaka and the West Coast, near the Haast River, found it necessary to communicate with the Government of Canterbury, in consequence of a portion of the track passing through that Province, to obtain their concurrence to the work being performed. A reply has been received from the Canterbury Government expressing satisfaction at the prospect of an increase, in the means of communication between the two Provinces, and cordially assenting to carrying the road wherever it may be found necessary. The shipping business since the departure of the last English mail via Panama, has been the usual average. There have been, according to the returns at the Port Chalmers Custom House, 39 arrivals, and the same number of departures, the inward tonnage being 11,430, and the outward 10,209 Amongst these arrivals are three from Home, and two from Foreign ports; these from Home were the Thracian, on the 15th ult.; Countess Russell, on the 22nd; and the Josephine on the 2nd inst, all being from London, with full cargoes and passengers. The foreign arrivals were the Indian, from New York, via Adelaide, with part cargo, on the 22nd; and the Velocidade, with the second direct consignment of Chinese produce from Foo Chow-Foo, on the 24th, the latter vessel making a fine passage of 50 days. . . . (BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.) (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) WELLINGTON, Monday. On the 15th ultimo two villages were- attacked at Tauranga and taken, with the loss of two Europeans killed, three wounded, and three Friendly Natives wounded. The rebels lost a few killed and wounded. Nothing of importance since. Operations are closed for the present. Nearly all the rebels fled to the Thames District, in which, and m other districts, they get no countenance. . . .
