SUMMER BLOOMS

OAMARU SOCIETY'S SHOW

HIGH QUALITY OF EXHIBITS (Special ro Dailv Times) OAMARU, Dec. 7. The Summer Show of the North Otago Horticultural Society was held in the Drill Hall, Oamaru, to-day, and the colourful display of summer blooms attracted considerable public patronage at both the afternoon and evening sessions. The general lay-out of the hall was artistically arranged, and. though the entries were not so numerous as in previous years, owing to the continued dry weather, the exhibits were of high quality. One of the outstanding features was Mr G. S. Jones's exhibit of pot plants, which were tastefully arranged in two corners of the hall. The exhibitors are to be congratulated on the fine quality of the roses displayed. The exhibits were particularly good in colour and clean in appearance. The champion award in this class went to Mrs R. K. Ireland for a very fine specimen of "Mrs George Ge'aty."' Some very fine spikes of delphiniums, Iceland poppies, and sweet peas were shown, though some lacked length of stem. The champion award for pansies was annexed by Mrs B. Bartley with a fine black and gold specimen, and Miss Winnie Slater was successful against Mr G. S. Jones in the Redcastle Cup competition. The society's challenge cup went to the Waiareka Women's Institute for two bays of well-grown specimens of flowers, artistically arranged. The decorative section contained many exhibits of merit, though it was evident that some of the competitors had attempted too much in the limited time available for arrangement. The children's classes were again a prominent feature of the show, exhibits coming forward in large numbers to gain much complmentary comment. In an excellent display of vegetables, Mr G. M. Luke was successful in gaining most points. The prize list is as follows: POT PLANTS Judge: Mr R. Fountain (Dunedin) Collection of 12 pot plants. Two entries—G. S. Jones 1 and 2.
