SECOND NIGHT'S EVENTS FOUR NEW TITLE-HOLDERS A further step forward with the events in the Otago senior, intermediate, and junior swimming championships was taken last evening when four races were decided in the Municipal Baths. Some good exhibitions were given, and four new title-holders were found. The results were as follows: — 400 METRES MEN'S BACKSTROKE (1936 title-holder, P. E. Mathieson, Kiwi) A. Thomas (Kiwi) .. .. 1 B. Kerr (Dunedin) .. .. 2 Only starters. Thomas won by seven yards. Time, 6min 24 3-ssec. 440 YARDS BOYS' INTERMEDIATE (1936 title-holder, K. Leckie, Dunedin) P. Ferguson led for the first eight lengths, then Young started to close up on him, and finally drew away to win by about four yards. Three yards separated second and third. DOMINION RECORD BROKEN INTERMEDIATE GIRL'S FAST TIME (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 7. The New Zealand record for a 220 Yards freestyle swim by intermediate girls was lowered by one second to 2min 49 3-ssec by Miss Kathleen Grey, of the Otahuhu Club, at the Auckland Intermediate Junior Championship carnival held in the Tepid Baths to-night. Miss Grey moved smoothly through the water with a relaxed, easy style, and retained the title by five yards. The previous record was held by Miss Islay Purdie (Dunedin). Miss Purdie registered 2min 40sec as an intermediate in the race at Auckland last Easter, but chose to have her perrecognised as a senior ladies' record.
