GREEN ISLAND BOROUGH

COUNCIL'S MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Green Island Borough Council was held last night, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr T. McAhan) and Crs J. A. Brown, W. Dickinson, A. D. McGregor, V. R. Pringle, J. C. Russell, W. T. Smellie, T. S. Tomkins, and G. A. Orange. HOSPITAL AFFAIRS At the invitation of the council, Mr J. W. Dove (chairman of the Otago Hospital Board) and Miss B. Farquhar (a member of the board) were present to give councillors some conception of the cost of hospital administration and a brief account of the board's future building schemes. After Mr Dove had given an interesting address and had answered several questions, Cr Dickinson thanked him for his information and Miss Farquhar for her attendance. ADMINISTRATION COSTS Protesting against the recommendations of the Finance Committee to increase the salaries of the town clerk and the borough foreman to £3BO a vear and £3l2' respectively, Cr Dickinson said that the costs of administration of the Green Island Borough Council were soaring out of all proportion to what the people were paying in rates. The council was riding for a fall, he added. After a brief discussion on a motion by Cr McGregor that a special meeting be held to investigate the cost of administration of the council, the recommendations were approved. COMMITTEES' REPORTS RESERVES AND CEMETERY The Reserves and Cemetery Committee recommended as follows: —That the first meeting of the new Green Island Domain Board be held on January 31, 1938; that an option be taken over the Glenfoot property and inquiries be made in reference to acquiring land surrounding the soldiers' memorial and also the land property of Shand's estate abutting the Main road between Jefcott street and Brighton road: that a gate be formed at the top entrance to the cemetery; that the offer of Mr Gardiner to pay the sum of £1 for the right to cut hay on Miller Park be ; accepted. The report was approved. DRAINAGE AFFAIRS : The Drainage Committee recommended as follows:—That the original offer made to the trustees in the estate . of the late John Edgar for the pur- \ chase of allotments 4,5, and 6, Brooklyn, be adhered to; that the tender of Mr H. L. Winter for drainage cartage at 6s 6d per hour be accepted; that the tender of the North Otago Engineering Company, Ltd.. to supply ventilators be accepted; that the offer of Hume Steel Company to supply vent pipes for 2s 33d per foot, f.0.b.. Dunedin, be accepted. The report was approved. ENGINEER'S REPORT The engineer (Mr F. J. Williams) reported as follows on work done during the past month: — MAIN HIGHWAYS Dunedin-Invercargill Highway. Some repairs have been effected to this highway throughout its length. - Portion of the broken pavement on Brown's Hill has been repaired and • seems to be standing fairly well. The proposals outlined in the previous report were submitted to the local repre- ' sentative of the Main Highways Board, who advised that it was the intention ' of the board to attend to all surfaces of the highway throughout the borough. * Green Island-Taieri Mouth Highway. —Messrs Fulton Ilogan, Ltd., have been advised that their offer to repair broken portions of this highway has been accepted and permission to carry out the work has been granted by the board. They made a start with the work on Saturday. Kaikorai Valley Road.—This highway has been graded each week since . the last report, but no material has been required. It continues to corru- ) gate badly with the dry weather, and there are complaints from the dust - J nuisance. Speed signs as set out In J the traffic regulations have been erected on the highways throughout the ... borough. | ' I r' GENERAL j Building permits amounting to £BBI were issued during the month. Good progress continues to be made with the concrete kerbing and channelling on the Main road. To date, 12 chains of kerbing and channelling have been completed, seven chains asphalted, and an additional length :' of one chain has been kerbed. The footpath was very irregular in regard to levels, and some fofmation work has been necessary in order to establish a good grade for the storm water , to the existing drains. The following general works have , been carried out since the last report: .. —Kaikorai Valley road was graded regularly when the grader was used on Short street. In Quarry road metal and blinding have been spread as far as District road. Harraway's road ; footpath has been cleaned and fine screenings have been spread on it as far as the railway station. In John i street a stone wall was erected m order to give an entrance to a newlyerected residence. In Church street \ the footpath between Muir street and Kirkland street has been asphalted, and the portion between Kirkland street and the District road will be commenced this week. In District road between Church street and York street the grader was used to clean out the water tables. In Neill street ( a commencement has been made with . metal and blinding from the bridge to Abbotsford road. DRAINAGE PROGRESS The engineer reported as follows on drainage and sewerage work done during the month:Group No. 2.—The group has been employed upon the extension of the main sewer along Kaikorai Valley • road. The men have now completed this work and made a commencement ■ with the Short street sewer. The sewer to serve the Short street properties , is not on the road, but is being laid at the rear of the properties from . Kaikorai Valley road to the Main South road. All manholes on thi? : line have been completed, and a portion of the group has been engaged • upon house service connections and j the erection of ventilators, two of ,) which have been completed. Group No. 3.—After group No. 3 had i completed the main sewer in the Main j' South road from Abbotsford road to the boundary it commenced laying the six-inch sewer across the Main South road, through the Gun Club's property, and this has been laid to the man- , hole near Morland's. As there was an objection to the continuation of this sewer, the group was transferred to the Main road and has commenced laying the sewer on the. southern portion, of the road from Runciman street ~ towards Kane's crossing. By the end . of the week connections can be made « to any dwellings in Sunnyvale. Group No. 4.—The group has continued work in the township of Burn- f) side Extension. The men have completed the sewer from the intersection of John and Reid streets up Lethaby ' street and into Henry street. t The length of six-inch and nme-inch sewer laid amounts to approximately J seven miles and a-half.
