Mr J W. Munro, M.P., left yesterday morning en route for Wellington. Mr J McG. Wilkie. the Otago Harbour Board's engineer, left yesterday morning for Wellington to attend a meeting of the New Zealand Institute of Engineers.

Mr and Mrs Edgar C. Hazlett, who have been on an extensive tour abroad, returned by the express yesterday afternoon.

Mr W. C Allnutt, now residing in Timaru, arrived in Dunedin yesterday for a visit of a few days' duration. Mr P. A. Godfrey Phillips, a director of Messrs Godfrey Phillips, Ltd., and Abdulla Products, London, is at present visiting Dunedin and is staying at the City Hotel.

Reference to the loss suffered by the business community in Dunedin through the death of Mr C. Russell Smith was made by the president (Mr J. S. Skinner) at the meeting of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce last night. Mr Smith had for many years been one of the chamber's esteemed members, Mr Skinner said, and he had rightly been described as one of Dunedin's most public-spirited citizens. His organising gifts were at the disposal of many institutions both civic and philanthropic, and he would be greatly missed.

The Union Airways liner Karoro left the Taieri airport at 8.15 yesterday morning for Christchurch, Blenheim, and Palmerston North with Mrs Abbey White for Nelson. Mr W. J. M. Wilson for Wellington, and Messrs D. F. Sandys-Wunsch and J. R. Bayley (through passengers for New Plymouth). The Kotuku arrived from the north at 3 p.m. with Mr A. Bennet from Blenheim and Miss M. Martin, Messrs T. B. Levy, and J. H Gormley from Christchurch.

The managers of the Orient Line annjunce that Mr D. L. Dowdell has expressed his desire to retire from the position of general manager of the line in Australia, a position which he has filled with success for 18 years. This has been agreed to with great regret, to take effect as from the end of the year. Mr A. W. Johnson, the present branch manager in Sydney, who has been associated with the company for 37 vears. has been appointed general manager as from January 1 next. Mr L. J. Morshead has been appointed branch manager in Sydney and Mr R. H. Norman branch manager in Melbourne, both as from January 1.
