PORT CHALMERS NEWS

TIMBER FOR MILLING At a special meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council it was decided to accept the tender of Carter's Box Factory for the removal for milling purposes of a quantity of Pinus insignis trees on the water reserve at Sawyers' Bay. The figure offered was regarded as satisfactory, and it is anticipated that the deal will bring in a sum which will materially improve the financial position of the borough. The trees sold are 25 years old, and felling will be commenced in January, the timber being removed immediately to the mill. Arrangements are now in hand for the clearing and replanting of the areas which will be cut out by the contractor. FIRE BOARD The quarterly meeting of the Port Chalmers Fire Board was attended by Messrs S. E. T. Crimp (in the chair), E. H. Ferguson, W. Pryde, F. C. Smith and J. Farquharson. The repart from the brigade stated that the motor was running very well since it was overhauled. Couplings had been fitted to 250 feet of new hose. There were no refills for the chemical extinguisher on hand. The brigade had attended a chimney fire in Bellevue place, using a chemical extinguisher The brigade had held three wet practices, using the pump from the water main. The pump was tried at Carey Bay, but the tide was too low for the pump to lift water from the harbour. During the quarter there had been seven roll calls, three meetings, three practices, and one fire, with an average response of nine men. Fireman W Albertson had resigned, as he was leaving the district, and a young man had taken his place as a probationer. A number of the brigade members had been measured for new uniforms. They wished to be supplied with caps as well. Four smoke helmets had come to hand. The report was adopted, and it was decided to obtain new uniform caps and chromium buttons for the new brigade uniforms. The chairman said that 12 new uniforms had been ordered for the brigade. It was decided to obtain a length of reinforced hose for the motor engine pump. The matter of the board amalgamating with the Metropolitan Fire Board was discussed, and it was decided to obtain data on the subject. Mr Pryde tendered his resignation as a member of the board, as he was leaving for Auckland. The chairman said they were sorry to lose Mr Pryde, who had been a valuable member of the board. Their best wishes would *o with him. Mr Pryde, in reply, said his relations with the board had been very cordial and he regretted leaving.
