BURNSIDE STOCK SALE

OVER-SUPPLIED MARKET FAT CATTLE In an over-supplied yarding of 397 head there was a fair proportion of good quality grade, but the bulk was composed of medium descriptions, with a fair number being only mediocre as to quality. Taken over the whole yarding, bullocks were in the majority, there being not the usual supply of cows and heifers. The sale opened with a strong demand for good quality, cattle, which, for a time, showed little disparity with last week’s average rates, but thence the sale noticeably eased, with the result that prices could be quoted generally easier to the extent of £2 over all heavy grades. Handy weights, particularly cows and heifers, however, did not suffer to the same extent. Quotations were; Extra prime bullocks, to £2O 12s 6d; prime, £l6 5s to £l7 12s 6d; medium, £l2 10s to £l3 15s; light, from £9 12s 6d; prime heavy cows and heifers, £lO to £l2 2s 6d; medium, £7 2s 6d to £8 15s; light, from £4 17s 6d. Included in the entry were a few pens of three and four-year-old bullocks in fresh condition, and these met with moderate competition, prices ranging from £8 to £9. There was also a consignment of Polled Angus 18-month heifers and steers which realised £3 16s and £4 10s respectively. Anything lacking breeding was sold at reduced rates. Three-year-old bullocks under this category in fresh order sold to £5 15s, and heifers to £3 15s. Backward sorts of the latter class made from £2 2s to £2 12s 6d. Boner and grazier classes sold at reduced rates in consequence of the drought conditions at present prevailing. At no stage was competition at all keen for any particular class. There were only a few consignments of heavy grades forward in. an extra large yarding numbering 3072; The bulk of the entry was composed or medium to prime descriptions, with; wethers predominating in numbere. but there was also a fair proportion of light classes, which were plain as to quality. Owing to the over-supply and the fact that certain butchers had acquired their requirements outside, competition _ was dull from the outset, resulting m a sharp decline in prices. Wethers generally could be quoted easier to the extent of 8s to 10s and ewes 6s to 8s on the average, compared with last sale. Passings were fairly frequent during the progress of the sale, ana .oyer the final three races sales were difficult to effect at all. consequently passings became more numerous, with the result that there was a fairly large carry-over in this section. Quotations were:— Prime heavy wethers, up to 31s 3d; nrime wethers, 26s 6d to 28s; medium, 23s to 24s 6d; light, from 21s; extra prime heavy ewes, 25s to 27s 3d; prime heavy ewes, 21s 6d to 23s 6d; medium, 18s 6d to 20s; light and aged, from 10s 6d.
