TRAFFIC IN DRUGS

AN INTERNATIONAL RING SEVERAL ARRESTS IN AMERICA THREE OFFICIALS INCLUDED (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) NEW YORK, Dec. 1. (Received Dec. 1, at 11.35 p.m.) Federal indictments against 20 alleged members of an international narcotics smuggling ring who were responsible for the entry of millions of dollars’ worth of drugs into the United States revealed an ingenious method of operation by which the gang financed round the world tours of several attractive and smartly groomed young women whose luggage contained heroin. Three Customs officials are among the prisoners. They would look the other way instead of inspecting luggage, receiving 1000 dollars on each occasion. The prisoners, including the women travellers, were rounded up in three simultaneous raids led by Customs men who were anxious to redeem the good name of the service.

The profit to the gang is illustrated by the fact that on six known trips costing less than 200,000 dollars the women brought in heroin valued in excess of 1,000,000 dollars.
