OBITUARY
MLLE MEURTHE (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) PARIS, Nov. 30. The death has occurred of Mile Suzanne Deutsche de la Meurthe, the famous airwoman, after whom the Deutsche de la Meurthe Prize is named. COLONEL CHARLES MONK GIBBON LONDON, Nov. 30. The death has occurred of Colonel Charles Monk Gibbon, to whom Colonel J. L. Sleeman pays a tribute in The Times as one who sacrificed his chance of active service in war time in order to train those required to swell a small army into a large. The heavy losses suffered by the New Zealand Division could never have been made good but for the efforts of those like Colonel Gibbon, who performed an uncongenial task with splendid courage and astounding energy. Colonel Gibbon was director of military operations and General Staff Officer of the New * Zealand military forces during the Great War. ' He was stationed in Wellington. MR PHILIP BROWN / With the death of Mr Philip Brown, of Naseby, another of the fast diminishing band of prospectors and miners has nassed away. Born in Castlemain, Victoria, on December 18, 1866, the deceased arrived in New Zealand with his parents the following year and they proceeded immediately to the Naseby goldfields, then known as the Hogburn. From his earliest years the deceased lived in an atmosphere of gold mining and participated in the development of this industry from the tin dish and cradle to the pres-ent-day methods. He also shared in some of the phenomenally rich returns irf the Naseby district and experienced the hopes deferred and setbacks to be expected in seeking the elusive metal. Having spent a lifetime in mining the deceased had acquired a great fund of practical knowledge and an unusually keen perception in the matter of locating gold. Many are indebted to him for his assistance and advice (most cheerfully given) in this connection. The deceased was married in 1895 to Miss Lillias Spedding, a daughter of Mr Joseph Spedding, of Naseby, by whom he is survived.
